About The Position

Under the direction of the Language Program Director the Twulshootseed Certification Instructor is responsible for overseeing the Twulshootseed teacher certification program to produce State Certified Twulshootseed Instructors for the Puyallup Tribe of Indians.Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Process Twulshootseed teacher certification applicants with Language Program Director and Lushootseed Language Consultant. Provide orientation for accepted Twulshootseed teacher certified applicants. Assess and place students according to speaking level with direction of the Language Program Director and Lushootseed Language Consultant. Coordinate schedules for certification classes. Create database and maintain student records, certification plans, attendance, homework, re-certification students and expiration dates, Twulshootseed certificates held through Washington State OSPI, etc. Teach certification and re-certification classes under the direction of Lushootseed Language Consultant. Upon completion of Level 1 certification, assist Twulshootseed certification students with their applications through Washington State OSPI Language Teaching Certificate application, abuse and neglect course, classroom management course, cultural sensitive training, fingerprint appointment and submittal of completed OSPI application to Washington State.Provide Language Program Director and Lushootseed Language Consultant with student updates, classroom data and status reports.Attends and participates in required staff meetings and other activities and events deemed necessary. Participate in Language Program classes, language exercises and linguistic classes. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college
  • Level Three Certification in the Lushootseed Language
  • Minimum of two years teaching and studying the Southern Lushootseed language and culture
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Southern Lushootseed language and Coast Salish culture
  • Must demonstrate an ability to research Southern Lushootseed language and seek out cultural information
  • Must be able to design and implement lesson plans for students and staff having a wide range of ages, abilities and achievements
  • Demonstrated ability to teach others
  • Must have knowledge of effective student behavior management techniques and ability to deal with students in a positive and confident manner.
  • Must organize educational activities and effectively communicate with students ranging from infants to elders keeping in mind maturity and attention span levels of students
  • Must have Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.
  • Must have and maintain a First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Must have ability to speak and understand and read the Southern Lushootseed language.
