About The Position

BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Site Administrator, a substitute employee is one hired with the understanding that his/her association with Gilroy Unified School District will be on a substitute basis, as needed, because of the absence of a permanent or probationary employee. Substitute employees are paid at an hourly or daily rate, determined by the school district. The Substitute (Certificated Teacher) works in the absence of the classroom teacher, provides instruction, encourages student progress, maintains safety, and manages the learning environment. TYPICAL DUTIES (Responsibilities will include but are not be limited to): The Substitute (Certificated Teacher) is responsible for the following duties: Teaches classes from prepared lesson plans Oversees learning and safety of students Communicates as necessary with school staff and administration Follows professional practices consistent with school and system policies in working with students, students’ records, parents, and colleagues Interacts in a professional manner with students and parents Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information Works cooperatively with all school personnel and parents Complies with Gilroy Unified School District Board of Education policies Conducts assigned classes at the times scheduled Enforces regulations concerning student conduct and discipline Ensures the adequate supervision to assure health, welfare, and safety of all students Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities Reports all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately or as soon as is reasonably possible Implements lesson plans, while ensuring the integrity of academic time and in a manner which motivates students to learn and participate Dismisses all students from the classroom before leaving the building Performs all non-instructional duties as assigned of the classroom teacher Collects and places students’ papers in regular teacher’s desk or designated area Returns instructional materials, equipment, and keys to proper place Performs other related activities as required

Requirements

  • Knowledge/understanding of working with minors and child/adolescent psychology
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Record-keeping techniques
  • Operate computers and peripheral equipment properly and efficiently
  • Maintain various records related to work performed
  • Work independently with little direction
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Emergency 30-Day Substitute Permit or equivalent
