About The Position

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers are trained within the fire department and designed to support the City of Marion and Linn County Emergency Management programs as needed, enhancing the effectiveness of community efforts in disaster response, preparedness, community risk reduction, and special event support services.

Requirements

  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to comprehend the Incident Command System methodology and terminology.
  • Ability to focus and effectively engage with stressful conditions and events.
  • Possess the energy, desire, and time to donate to the different job assignments and activities needed to accomplish the organization's mission.
  • Ability to stay connected using technology to be activated during times of a critical event and/or disaster.
  • Ability to express or exchange information electronically using email, text, and other means.
  • Ability to receive and convey detailed instructions and information.
  • Attends quarterly training sessions and is an active member of the team.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid, medical triage, and CPR and skill in their application.
  • Knowledge of disaster psychology.
  • Knowledge of fire safety and utility controls.
  • Knowledge of light search and rescue.
  • Ability to support organizational programs, goals, and mission.
  • Ability to read, speak, write, and understand English to effectively communicate with residents and employees by telephone, two-way radio, in written form or face-to-face.
  • Ability to hear speech and other commands effectively to allow for the taking of direction.
  • Ability to run, crawl, climb, and maneuver when physical mobility is required.
  • Conforms with the City of Marion chain-of-command and functions within the Incident Command System during incident operations.
  • Ability to traverse over areas of heavy environmental/structural damage.
  • Prior experience is not required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have valid Iowa driver's license.
  • Must complete the 20+ hour Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) Community Emergency Response Team training curriculum (provided by the department).

Responsibilities

  • Responds to critical, planned events and unplanned disasters, upon request, to support community life safety, incident stabilization, and property conservation.
  • Inform, educate, and train community members on disaster preparedness and community risk reduction.
  • Interfacing with a variety of residents and city staff.
  • Assists in other programs, such as public education engagements including fire prevention, bystander CPR and AED education, stop the bleed, and other focused risk reduction activities.
  • Performs related work as needed.
  • Supports other special projects as needed.
