The position involves providing direct and indirect patient care within any clinical area under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The role is classified as PRN (as needed) and requires working shifts from 08:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, with the possibility of including weekends and holidays. The position is non-exempt.

  • Displays proficiency in providing personal hygiene services, chiefly to adult and geriatric patients, and adjusts methods appropriately depending on age and development of patient.
  • Before beginning patient care, verifies care to be performed by reviewing Aide Assignment Sheet.
  • Measures patient's temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respirations each visit and notifies the Hospice Nurse or Department Director of any abnormalities.
  • Observes patient with special equipment (NG tubes, catheters, etc.) and reports any abnormalities to the Hospice nurse or Director.
  • Reports any observed or stated pain to the nurse or Director.
  • Performs or assists with complete bed bath, partial bath, tub or shower as directed, and assists with dressing, undressing, and toileting.
  • Maintains correct infection control procedures throughout provision of care.
  • Administers enemas as directed by the licensed nurse, noting results and reporting any problems.
  • Assists patients in maintaining good body alignment and assists with ambulation, transfers, and exercises.
  • Collects urine, stool, and sputum specimens as directed by the licensed nurse.
  • Performs household chores essential to the patient's health care at home.
  • Prepares simple, nutritious meals in accordance with the Aide Assignment Sheet.
  • Provides emotional and psychological support to the patient and household members.
  • Contacts the Hospice office for schedule confirmation and submits Aide Progress Notes daily.
  • Consults with and keeps nurses or the director informed of activities, needs, and problems related to patient care.
  • Complies with established department and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives and maintains good relations.
  • Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information.
  • Attends required meetings, in-services, and educational programs.
  • Documents patient information in a concise, legible manner.
  • Reports any unsafe conditions or incidents to the Hospice Nurse or the Director.
  • Complies with departmental policies concerning dress code.
  • Maintains a car for work, automobile liability insurance, and a current driver's license.
  • Follows compliance programs and submits only compliant charges.
  • Performs job duties in a financially responsible manner.
  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant in the state of Louisiana is required.
