GENERAL P URPOSE OF J OB : The A dvanced Pra cti ce Professional (APP) A cute Care is a skilled individual, qualified by academic and clinical education who provides assistance in the provision o f specialty and acute medical care for children with a wide variety of acute, com plex acu te, critical an d chro nic illness in the inpatient setting . Th e AP P Acute Care – PICU and IMC will function independently, under the supervision a n attending physician in accordance with a standard care arrangemen t a nd specialty board certifica tion . Assis t with physic ian - direct ed care in cluding: 1) Wri te approp riate orders (e.g. nursing care , medica tion orders, laboratory and imaging /radiological ex aminations). 2) Review pertinent abnormal findings in the patient's history, physical examination, r adiological and laboratory d ata with s upervisi ng physician , obtain ap propriate referral/consultation, additi onal laboratory or radiological studies as needed, and initiate appropriate medical intervention(s). 3) If applicable, c omplete s consultations approved by the supervi s ing physicia n with fol low - up a s indicated. Ensure tes ting has been completed, results verifi ed, review labs/studies and vital signs. Complete p rogress note as indicated. 4) Review of laboratory and radiologic data. Make appropriate interventio ns as indicated . 5) Advise sup ervising p hysician o f unexpected events, providing an accurate synopsis of event s re lated to a major change in the patient’s condit ion and describing corrective measures already taken. 6) Daily assessment of patient’s hospital cour se, write note o f patient’s progress i n chart as it pertains to the s upervising physician and implement indi cate d therapy as determined by the supervising phys ician. 7) Communicate with Supervising Physician, Medical Team and patient/family to establish antic ipated discharg e needs and i nitiate di scharge te aching. 8) Assists with the coordination of discharge planning and/ or follow - up. 9) Serve as a resource for clinical staff. 10) Assess, perform, and document parent/patient education. 11) Participate in acute care based s ervice conferen c es. 12) Collabor ate with r esear ch p ersonnel on research projects and data collection . guidelines.

Requirements

  • ADVANCED PRACTICE REGISTER ED NURSE (APRN )
  • Master’s or Post Master’s Degree, R equired.
  • Graduation from a Nurse Practit ioners Progr am w ith p ractic e au t hority in th e St ate o f T exas, R equire d.
  • Minimum of 1 - 2 years of pediatric acu te care experience , r equired.
  • BLS , PALS and ACLS r equire d .
  • Active and une ncumbe red nurse practitioner and re gistered nurse license in the State of Texas, required .
  • Advanced specialty courses and ongoing education requirements as re quired by DCH.
  • Basic Life Support ( BLS) c ertificatio n, required.
  • D CH Credent ia ling obtain ed w ithi n time frame required and continuou sly maintained ongoing .
  • Must obtain DCH credentialing as an active member of medical staff and appropriat e medical privile ges, required.
  • Master’s or Post Ma ster’s D egree, Required.
  • Completion of an Accreditati on Review Co mmission on Educat ion for the Physician Assistant (ARC - PA) approved p rogram (prior to January 2 001 - Commission on Accreditation o f Al lie d Health Educati on Programs), r equired.
  • BLS , PALS and ACLS r equire d .
  • Minimum of 1 - 2 years of pediatric acute care experience , r equired.
  • Current cert ification by t he Nation al Commi ssion on Certification of Physic ia n Assistants (NCCPA),
  • Physician Assi stant, Certified (P A - C), requ ired.
  • Active and unenc umbered license in the State of Texas, required
  • Advanced specialty courses and ongoing e duc ation requir ements as re quired by D CH.
  • Basi c Life Support ( BLS) c ertificati on, required.
  • DCH Credentialing obtai ned within time frame require d and continuously maintained ongoing.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.

  • Participate and assist with coordination and continuity of care.
  • If applicable, performs and records history and physical examinations (initial admissions and consults will be seen by attending pulmonologist prior to implementing plan of care).
  • Assist with physician - directed care including: 1) Write appropriate orders (e.g. nursing care , medication orders, laboratory and imaging /radiological examinations). 2) Review pertinent abnormal findings in the patient's history, physical examination, radiological and laboratory data with supervising physician, obtain appropriate referral/consultation, additional laboratory or radiological studies as needed, and initiate appropriate medical intervention(s). 3) If applicable, completes consultations approved by the supervising physician with follow - up as indicated. Ensure testing has been completed, results verified, review labs/studies and vital signs. Complete progress note as indicated. 4) Review of laboratory and radiologic data. Make appropriate interventions as indicated . 5) Advise supervising physician of unexpected events, providing an accurate synopsis of events related to a major change in the patient’s condition and describing corrective measures already taken. 6) Daily assessment of patient’s hospital course, write note of patient’s progress in chart as it pertains to the supervising physician and implement indicated therapy as determined by the supervising physician. 7) Communicate with Supervising Physician, Medical Team and patient/family to establish anticipated discharge needs and initiate discharge teaching. 8) Assists with the coordination of discharge planning and/ or follow - up. 9) Serve as a resource for clinical staff. 10) Assess, perform, and document parent/patient education. 11) Participate in acute care based service conferences. 12) Collaborate with research personnel on research projects and data collection.
