About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, the Ceramics Instructor is responsible for instructing, leading, and supervising participants in creating clay projects.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of hand building techniques including slab, coil, and pinch pot construction, and using mold forms and the slab roller.
  • Knowledge of surface treatment techniques including slips, stains, and glazes.
  • Knowledge of porcelain, stoneware, and low fire clay bodies.
  • Knowledge of drying, loading, and firing artwork. Knowledge of firing practices including how to ramp a firing.
  • Ability to address complaints or resolve concerns.
  • Ability to work independently in day-to-day operations with general direction from supervisor.
  • For children's classes: Minimumone (1) year experience working with children or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have experience creating clay artwork, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, First Aid, CPR, and AED certification within two (2) months of hire.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Subject to modified/flexible work schedules.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and/or move objects weighing ≤ 30 lbs on a weekly basis. Lifting assistance is required when lifting > 30 lbs.
  • Regular onsite attendance is an essential function of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Implement activities and provide supervision and instruction of ceramics participants during classes.
  • Guide students through challenges as they create their piece.
  • Dry, load, and fire student artwork.
  • Educate participants on the firing process.
  • Maintain an organized and generally clean studio.
  • Communicate effectively with participants, guardians, and staff regarding rule infractions, questions, or concerns.
  • Demonstrate and support District customer service standards.
  • Maintain District equipment and facilities in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Distribute written communication as necessary or requested.
  • Record and communicate any difficult situations or behaviors to the Program Manager
  • Notify the Program Manager when supplies need to be ordered or restocked.
  • Other duties as assigned.
