About The Position

The Central Supply Technician at Northwell Health is responsible for the decontamination, sterilization, packaging, inventory management, and distribution of surgical instruments and supplies. This role ensures that all procedures comply with established department policies and safety protocols, contributing to a contaminant-free environment and supporting surgical operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Sterile processing certification (CRCST or CSPD) OR provisional certification (CRCST), required.
  • Must complete minimum annual continuing education credits required by NY State AND additional continuing education credits required to maintain certification status.
  • Prior experience processing surgical information, preferred.
  • Ability to lift/carry 25 pounds, required.
  • Manual dexterity, ability to stand, bend, lift and/or reach for extended periods of time, required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbally and in writing) and follow oral and/or written instructions, required.

Responsibilities

  • Disassemble, clean, sterilize, reassemble, and package sterile supplies according to specifications and manufacturer instructions.
  • Follow department procedures to use appropriate sterilization methods for various types of instrumentation.
  • Operate washers, sterilizers, ultrasonic machines, steam and ethylene oxide sterilizers, heat sealers, and additional equipment during sterilization procedures.
  • Adhere to instrument count sheets for surgical sets and case carts.
  • Cover and rotate trays and sets per sterile storage guidelines.
  • Follow safety protocols to ensure no injury to self or others during decontamination procedures.
  • Retrieve used trays, instruments, and equipment from various surgical and clinical hospital areas for decontamination.
  • Examine instruments and patient care equipment for cleanliness, proper assembly, and functionality.
  • Identify malfunctioning items, record related information, and promptly notify supervisor or biomedical engineer.
  • Receive and fill requisitions from hospital departments and nursing units, communicating with perioperative staff regarding related instrument needs.
  • Transport sterile supplies to assigned surgical and clinical locations.
  • Assist in ordering, stocking, and maintaining department inventory levels.
  • Perform required duties to maintain a contaminant-free work environment.
  • Document and maintain records of daily activities according to department policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to AORN, AAMI, and Joint Commission standards in the performance of duties.
  • Participate in department quality control programs and in-service training, as required.
