Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED minimum.
  • Current BLS.
  • Graduate from an accredited Sterile Processing school program (preferred) or 2 years' experience in an acute care setting as an SPD Technician in lieu of a formal SPD training program.
  • A minimum of 6 months Surgical Tech or Sterile Processing Tech experience preferred or new grad with completed minimum clinical hours required by IAHCSMM.
  • Certification for Sterile Processing Technicians from CBSPD or IAHCSMM preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Wash, decontaminate and reassemble instrument sets and sterile trays/packs.
  • Package and sterilize all autoclavable instruments for the department.
  • Operate Steam, STERRAD and Steris sterilizers.
  • Carry out daily biological testing on all sterilizers.
  • Stock, order and maintain par levels on sterile supplies.
  • Respond to and deliver urgent instrument/supply requests from OR rooms during surgical procedures.
  • Identify instruments and equipment in need of repair and follow appropriate procedures to ensure timely repair/replacement.
  • Coordinate sending supplies outside the hospital for Ethylene Oxide Sterilization as required and communicate effectively with OR or other departments, the courier service and the sterilizing facility about the timely pickup and return of the critical items.
