About The Position

Specific accountability for managing the operations of the Sterile Processing Department. These responsibilities include but are not limited to: Interpretation and implementation of policies and procedures, appropriate utilization of human and material resources, implementation of continuous quality improvement processes, internal and external departmental communications and professional growth of self and staff. Essential Job Functions Responsible for the management of Surgical Processing Department annual budget preparation for the fiscal year, payroll system, performance reviews, competencies, discipline, department and staff compliance, department policies and procedures as well as all interviews including the selection of personnel in an effort to ensure that organizational and department goals and objectives are met. Communicates and collaborates effectively with all members of the healthcare team. Able to communicate task specific information in order to maintain efficient workflow. Orders appropriate supplies to maintain department needs. Dispenses supplies to appropriate units as requested. Completes charges for medical supplies and order entry of medical supplies in a timely manner. Performs proper placement, storage, rotation and checking for outdated medical supplies. Maintains and coordinates outreach instrumentation/supply needs. Periodically conducts cycle inventories to maintain appropriate PAR Level of medical supplies. Oversees proper cleaning of medical instruments for sterilization. Performs proper cleaning and handling of medical equipment/instruments (Scopes, power equipment, lumens etc.). Performs proper loading of instruments into the washer/decontaminator. Selects appropriate cycle for the specific medical instruments to be processed. Appropriately uses the sonic washer. Maintains department and strictly adheres to the Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and International Association of Healthcare Central Materials Management Services (IAHCSMM) standards and stays abreast of data recommendations. Utilizes the Cencitrac Instrument Inventory list to assemble and complete surgical trays/instrumentation. Selects appropriate method for sterilization and monitors the process by using the following: Biologic indicators, steam indicators, Sterrad indicators etc. and interprets results. Maintains accurate documentation of sterilization records. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED or higher level of education.
  • 3 years sterile processing experience in a hospital setting.
  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.
  • Act 34-PA Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system
  • If hired or transferred after 12/28/2020: Must pass a central service exam for Central Service Technician (CST) AND obtain or hold a Certified registered central service technician credential OR Certified sterile processing and distribution technician credential within 18 months from date of hire and/or transfer.
