About The Position

JOB DESCRIPTION: Coordinates and oversees daily activities between the Operating Room (OR) and Central Sterile Services Department (CSS) to facilitate efficient case flow. Responsible for assisting in projects and process improvement initiatives in compliance with Policies & Procedures, Goals and Objectives and Expectations. Promotes customer service and satisfaction through training, education, and resolution of Staff and Physician issues and concerns. Must maintain knowledge of cleaning, assembling, packaging and sterilizing of all instruments and equipment according to the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD), the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), and the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) current standards. Incumbents are also accountable for demonstrating awareness of personal and work area safety at all times; using evidence-based practices (EBP) and complying with facility safety policies and procedures in carrying out duties including those for blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases and; keeping knowledge current on aseptic techniques and basic microbiology sufficient to understand the ways diseases and infections are transmitted and the importance of clean and sterile supplies in patient care; attending training in new and improved sterilization practices and developments in the microbiology, bacteriology, and therapeutic practices as they affect the sterile supply operation. Acts as liaison between SPD and OR to maintain workflow. Must be willing and able to foster positive work relationships with clinical nurse leaders and surgeons. Collaborates with Clinical Team Leaders, SPD and surgical resources coordinator to resolve issues, identify and recommend instruments purchase to eliminate future conflicts. Works with SPD Educator to develop in-service education programs as needed. Assesses supplies required for prescribed standard surgical procedures and sets up case carts. maintain inventory, collects, disassembles, inspects, cleans, disinfects and reassembles all instrument trays patient care equipment. Communicates with the CSS staff prior to the cases to ascertain specific instrument and supply needs and ensures these items are available. Must be able to resolve issues or offer alternatives when necessary. Makes recommendations for the maintenance of Physician preference cards. Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills. Serves, manages, and supports internal and external customers. Develops and improves skills through initiative, attendance and participation at educational programs. Conforms and adheres to department policies concerning decontamination, sterile processing, infection control and safety. Demonstrates knowledge of performance improvement tools and techniques. Continuously improves the quality of care and the work environment of outcomes and the integration of research and best practices into daily work. Shares learning from improvements with other units and/or spreads across the business unit or system. Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams and relationships through mentoring and modeling uplifting and positive communication. Evaluates staff schedule and re-assigns staff according to departmental needs. Independently direct the department workflow on off-shifts and week-ends or in the absence of the Manager or Specialty Director. Reports in real time all errors to the SPD Manager, SPD Educator and the OR Surg. Technicians. Maintains a working knowledge of, and is able to effectively troubleshoot, all decontamination/sterilization equipment Models team behaviors to frontline employees. Participates in the orientation of new associates. Serves as the resource for information for employees and internal/ external customers. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 2 years in sterile processing
  • Sterile Processing Technician Certification (CBSPD or CRCST)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in computer skills.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow instructions

Nice To Haves

  • Some college or an Associated Degree
  • 1 - 2 years in a supervisory role
  • Surgical Technologist experience
  • CIS, CHL Certificates
  • Knowledge of tracking systems, e.g., SPM
