About The Position

The position involves collaborating with departmental leadership to ensure that Sterile Processing Technicians receive proper education, training, and competencies. The role requires adherence to the standards and guidelines of multiple industry agencies, including TJC, AAMI, FDA, CDC, and AORN. The educator also serves as a liaison to promote sterilization, decontamination, and assembly processes for other market facilities when necessary.

Requirements

  • Completion of job-related coursework: Surgical Tech, Sterile Processing Tech, or Dental Assistant training program.
  • Two (2) years of CSPD (Sterile Processing) experience.
  • In lieu of the education requirement, will accept two (2) years related experience.
  • Certification as either CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) from HSPA or CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing & Distribution Technician) from CBSPD.
  • Certification as CIS (Certified Instrument Specialist) from HSPA or CSIS (Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist) from CBSPD preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement all education and competencies in decontamination, assembly, sterilization processes, and standard precautions for the department.
  • Identify, interpret, and disseminate timely education to ensure professional development.
  • Utilize hands-on continuous training across all shifts.
  • Conduct initial and continuous assessments of skills and knowledge for staff members.
  • Promote performance improvement and routinely audit for quality control related to technical skills.
  • Participate in the staff performance review process and provide feedback to management regarding competency and completion of required educational programs.
  • Maintain employee education files, including competencies, continuing education units, and documentation required by Prisma Health or regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations, standards, and guidelines consistent with AAMI, AORN, TJC, CMS, CDC, OSHA, and FDA requirements.
  • Maintain and update knowledge of industry standards and evidence-based practices through active research and participation in relevant professional organizations.
  • Develop and implement monthly and weekly education plans for individual employees.
  • Coordinate on-site training provided by outside vendors.
  • Present at staff meetings.
  • Assist in the maintenance and expanded utilization of the department's electronic tray management system.
  • Train all new staff to utilize the management system appropriately.
  • Represent Sterile Processing in interdepartmental or interdisciplinary projects, committees, or task forces.
  • Partner with outside departments and regional educational facilities to coordinate clinical rotations and shadowing days.
  • Participate in the creation and revision of policies and procedures related to the department.
  • Perform as a Sterile Processing Technician when education responsibilities are not required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
