About The Position

The Central Scheduler is responsible for scheduling, obtaining a valid order for the examination, selecting the correct fin# and provider name. This includes entering the appropriate diagnostic testing order, demographics, and insurance information into the hospital information system to facilitate patient care and hospital billing procedures. In doing so, the Central Scheduler helps to ensure patient flow through the scheduling and registration systems as quickly and efficiently as possible, while also ensuring all fiscal procedures are followed in a consistent manner. The Central Scheduler functions as a liaison for patients with questions regarding their scheduled test, exam or procedure including preparations or general questions. The incumbent also performs clerical duties assigned by and under the direct supervision of the department manager.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Course in medical terminology or hospital/physician office experience preferred.
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing
  • Ability to work under pressure while interacting in a helpful, courteous manner with a high degree of patient contact.
  • Effective at adjusting to change, prioritizing duties, handling stress and effectively communicating face-to-face or over the telephone with employees, patients and providers
  • Strong typing/computer skills in order to efficiently accurately enter scheduling information

Nice To Haves

  • Course in medical terminology or hospital/physician office experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides scheduling functions for all assigned scheduled department procedures in the hospital setting
  • Schedules procedures via the hospital information system following established protocols which promote provider satisfaction and scheduling efficiencies; coordinates STAT scheduling directly with the technologist and provider (if needed) in the affected area(s.)
  • Maintains the flow of communication within central scheduling, including answering the telephone and providing information and directions for patients and other guests.
  • Promotes positive interactions with co-workers, customers and guests
  • Identifies the need for and obtains from the provider office all pre-certifications required by payers on all scheduled procedures.
  • Solves practical problems, dealing with a variety of issues, and interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written and oral form.
