About The Position

The Custodian/Bus Driver position at Hoke County Schools involves dual responsibilities of safely transporting students on assigned bus routes and performing custodial duties to maintain cleanliness and order in school facilities. This role is essential for ensuring a safe and respectful environment for students while also upholding the cleanliness and functionality of the school premises.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • General knowledge and experience in building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment.
  • Valid North Carolina commercial driver's license with proper endorsements and a current Bus Driver Pocket Card.
  • Minimum age of 18 with at least six months of driving experience.
  • Clean driving record with no DWI convictions.
  • Must pass DOT drug and alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

  • Operates the school bus on assigned routes and schedules as provided by the Transportation Office.
  • Safely transports students to and from designated locations in accordance with assigned routes and schedules.
  • Maintains student discipline and ensures a safe and respectful environment on the bus.
  • Completes all reports relating to transportation.
  • Informs Transportation Specialist or TIMS Manager of any students added or deleted from route which may necessitate a change in route or bus stop.
  • Adheres to all traffic laws, school bus regulations, and transportation policies.
  • Conducts pre- and post-trip inspections of the bus to ensure operational safety.
  • Reports any mechanical issues or route changes to the Director of Transportation.
  • Maintains effective communication with parents, students, and school personnel.
  • Attends bus safety meetings.
  • Secures the school bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route.
  • Reports observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus.
  • Performs cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and sanitizing restrooms, offices, and common areas.
  • Cleans and sanitizes water fountains.
  • Dusts and cleans furniture, windows, and other fixtures.
  • Collects and disposes of trash, recyclables, and debris.
  • Conducts light groundskeeping tasks, such as clearing walkways and blowing leaves from parking lots and/or sidewalks.
  • Handles minor building repairs and reports larger issues to the Central Office Operations Manager.
  • Ensures all assigned areas are clean, organized, and ready for daily operations.
  • Raises and lowers flags, as needed.
  • Opens buildings at the start of the workday; securely locks down facility at the end of the day.
  • Maintains inventory; requisitions cleaning supplies, as needed.
