About The Position

The Lead Technologist serves as a key member of the Central Accessioning Unit at the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health. This position provides advanced pre analytical oversight for clinical and environmental specimens and ensures all submissions meet federal regulatory standards and NCSLPH acceptance criteria. The Lead Technologist is responsible for reviewing and validating test orders, managing specimen data, and coordinating workflow through the Laboratory Web Portal and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This role supports accurate documentation, efficient specimen routing, and high-quality laboratory operations. The Central Accessioning Lead Technologist functions as a liaison between Central Accessioning, laboratory sections, and external submitters to support effective communication and high-quality specimen handling. Work is performed under the supervision of the Central Accessioning Supervisor and requires strong technical judgment, workflow coordination, and adherence to standardized procedures.

Requirements

  • Employees in this position must be capable of meeting the Federal CLIA ’88 personnel requirements of Testing Personnel in a laboratory performing high complexity testing.
  • Applicants must attach copies of their transcript(s) and/or certification(s) to be considered for the position
  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution OR Associate degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory OR Completion of a Certified Laboratory Assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and three years of experience in a medical laboratory OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily Central Accessioning receiving operations by prioritizing incoming specimens to meet required turnaround times.
  • Manage and monitor unit logs using the Lab Web Portal, which supports submission, tracking, and access to test requests and results, and LIMS, which manages sample data, testing workflows, and reporting.
  • Evaluate specimen acceptability and accession high‑volume submissions for multiple testing areas with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Investigate and resolve specimen discrepancies, documenting findings and communicating with providers, clinical staff, and couriers to ensure prompt correction.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain pre‑analytical instruments, including label printers and automated bulk‑loaders, to support uninterrupted operations.
  • Ensure adherence to PPE requirements, safety protocols, and all relevant standard operating procedures.
  • Draft, update, and implement SOPs, policies, and job aids, and conduct staff training on new or revised procedures.
  • Support quality improvement activities aligned with CLIA regulations and SLPH quality management practices.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining staff schedules, including weekend and holiday assignments.
  • Train processors, technologists, and testing personnel on workflow expectations, pre‑analytical procedures, and quality standards.
