The Costco Digital Services Division is inviting students currently enrolled in an IT or related undergraduate or graduate program at a college or university to participate in a twelve -week paid internship program during 2026. Interns will work within specific areas in Costco’s Information Systems Division. Interns will attend presentations given by various members of Executive Management from IT and other areas of the Company. Interns will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses. Housing is not provided. The program runs mid June to early September and is located in Issaquah, WA. No out of state work allowed. All interns will adhere to the CDS hybrid work model of three days onsite and two days remote. The Central Engineering team is responsible for optimizing the internal tools and platforms that enhance efficiency and user satisfaction across the company. As a UX/UI Developer Intern, you will join a team focused on transforming internal processes into intuitive digital experiences, directly impacting employee productivity. Our mission is to advance a standardized user experience strategy for non-member-facing applications by leveraging the Enterprise Design System (EDS). The Enterprise Design System, maintained by our team continues to grow as we learn about new use cases, teams contribute and provide feedback. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to observe and support this design system, helping us test new tools and contribute to the conversations as we continue to make progress. This includes creating new components, engaging users, and exploring how AI can be used to modernize processes, like validating compliance. By collaborating with engineers, you will gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment where your work helps bridge the gap between technical capabilities and internal user needs. NOTE: While participating in the IT Internship program, an individual will be classified as an hourly temporary employee for the duration of the program. During the program, the individual may be asked to undergo the normal interview process for a level 1 position. If the individual is offered a position, they will be converted to the employment status matching open job they were selected for. If they are not selected for a regular position, the internship position will be complete in a maximum of twelve weeks.

Requirements

  • Online portfolio demonstrating working knowledge and understanding of current best practices and tools used for design, accessibility, and UX Research.
  • Proficiency in using Figma for creating wireframes, high-fidelity interactive prototypes, and maintaining design components.
  • Familiarity with frontend code and/or frameworks and techniques to ensure designs are technically feasible and easily hand-off to engineering teams.
  • Ability to iteratively refine designs based on stakeholder feedback, user testing data, and team collaboration.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess good organizational, time, and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize, and stay well organized.
  • Currently maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Students currently enrolled in an IT or related undergraduate or graduate program at a community college, college or university.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience maintaining Figma component libraries and applying WCAG2.1AA accessibility guidelines to all design artifacts.
  • Experience leveraging AI design software or generative tools to streamline workflows, ideate concepts, or enhance visual assets.
  • Basic understanding of natural-language programming concepts (often referred to as "vibe coding"), demonstrating a willingness to experiment with AI tools to support rapid prototyping and bridge the gap between design and functional frontend code.
  • Proficiency in applying responsive principles—such as fluid grids and media queries—to ensure that internal tools and platforms remain intuitive and effective across mobile, tablet, and desktop devices.
  • Familiarity with agile software development.
  • Proficient in Google Workspace applications, including Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Gmail.
