About The Position

The CDOC Medical Records Technician I position is a part-time role based in Denver, Colorado, focused on the assembly, maintenance, and management of health records for the Colorado Department of Corrections. The technician will ensure compliance with legal requirements and HIPAA regulations while providing clinical administrative support to multi-disciplinary staff. This role requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in handling sensitive medical information.

Requirements

  • One year of full-time experience with data entry, scanning, and maintenance of protected health information in the medical record.
  • Education/certification in medical records, health information, medical assistant, or medical billing and coding can substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Excellent interpersonal, multi-tasking, and administrative skills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language and communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines.
  • Thorough, detail-oriented, and able to work independently.
  • Proficient in HIPAA compliance and Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and experience with electronic health records.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using policy to release protected health information to stakeholders with legal requests.
  • Experience as a Registered Health Information Technician, Medical Billing & Coding, or Medical Assistant.
  • Experience with conversion to electronic health records.
  • Experience working in a correctional environment.

Responsibilities

  • Safeguard and protect the inmate's right to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to medical information.
  • Manage requests for medical record information from inmates, third-party payers, and others.
  • Process requests in a timely and efficient manner while maintaining quality and accuracy.
  • Determine the validity of requests for the release of confidential health care information.
  • Execute, copy, and distribute the release of clinical information from health records.
  • Request clinical information from other agencies as needed.
  • Schedule inmates for review of health records and prepare billing memorandums for medical release services rendered.
  • Explain procedures and legal requirements for the release of information to offenders and others.
  • Track all released and requested private health information, including subpoenas and court orders.
  • Procure, track, and record inmate health record movement arriving in and out of the facility.
  • Check for correct filing order and track dictation from specialists and hospitals.
  • Assemble paper and electronic protected health information for facility clinic appointments and offender movement to specialty clinics.
  • Provide general office support, including answering phones and ordering supplies.
