York Technical College, a member of the South Carolina Technical and Comprehensive Education System, is a public, two-year institution of higher education that offers a variety of associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Through maximizing student success, the College seeks to contribute to the economic growth and development of York, Lancaster, and Chester counties and of the State. The CDL Instructor - WED performs the following functions: Instruction and Student Learning - Develops and delivers all required ELDT classroom instruction, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, Hours of Service rules, logbook management, vehicle systems, accident procedures, and related theory content. The role conducts behind-the-wheel instruction on the driving range and public roadways, teaches basic vehicle control, required range maneuvers, shifting, coupling and uncoupling, and safe operation in traffic environments. The instructor provides thorough instruction in pre-trip, in-route, and post-trip inspections, assesses student proficiency, and offers timely feedback to prepare students for CDL skills and knowledge examinations and for safe entry into the profession. Program Compliance and Record Management - Maintains all required instructional and compliance documentation, including attendance records, evaluations, and performance assessments, in accordance with institutional policies and federal and state CDL and ELDT regulations. The role ensures consistent adherence to College procedures and regulatory expectations related to documentation, safety, and instructional practice. The instructor contributes to curriculum review and continuous improvement activities to maintain alignment with industry standards and evolving regulations and supports student recruitment, orientation, and advising to promote retention and program completion. Safety, Vehicle Operations, and Equipment Readiness - Promotes a safety-centered environment in classrooms, on the training range, and on public roads by enforcing proper safety practices and modeling appropriate commercial driving conduct. The position conducts routine vehicle checks, monitors equipment condition, and communicates maintenance needs promptly to ensure safe operation of all training vehicles. The instructor maintains required professional credentials, including a valid DOT Medical Card and compliance with mandatory drug and alcohol testing programs, and consistently upholds safety expectations associated with professional commercial motor vehicle operation. Supports program operations by participating in campus events, division initiatives, employer visits, and community marketing efforts that strengthen awareness of CDL training and contribute to broader Workforce and Economic Development priorities.
