About The Position

A Philabundance Driver, CDL I carry out the primary operation of the organization - efficiently picking up and delivering donated surplus, prepared and perishable foods in the Philadelphia region. Drivers work an 8-hour shift between the hours of 5am and 5pm, M-F. Overtime, evening, weekend and/or holiday hours may be required as necessary. The Driver, CDL I role is also accountable for working as a collaborative team member by learning and understanding Philabundance PCK processes, distribution processes and will provide support to the operations team as needed and required. The Driver’s location must be known to the Transportation department for safety and for customer service reasons. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • CDL class B or A license required, must present license.
  • ServSafe Certification preferred. Certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire; training is provided by Philabundance.
  • Forklift Certification preferred. Certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire; training is provided by Philabundance.
  • Minimum of 2 years commercial or industrial driving experience with safe driving record, straight truck preferred.
  • Inventory, Shipping/Receiving experience.
  • Previous work in a team environment, ideally with deadlines, detail, safety, and large equipment.
  • Previous experience with organization, shared goals, and defined instructions.
  • Previous experience in tracking manually or with a database.
  • U.S. Department of Transportation medical certification required, proof required.
  • Strong customer service skills, ability to work with agency partners, vendors, donors, volunteers and other contacts.
  • Must meet all the applicable requirements as specified by the DOT.
  • Ability to influence and manage change, unexpected situations and delivery adjustments with ownership, poise, and strong communication, internally and externally.
  • Ability to read, write and complete basic math to support inventory, space calculations and tracking as is needed.
  • Must be able to tolerate some extreme temperatures when moving food and products through inventory and shipping process.
  • Ability to learn and work well within a defined operating system, follow directions, consistent placement, and tracking.
  • Ability to learn and grow with the position and business needs.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously with poise and a calm thinking pattern.

  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, no unacceptable incidents or arrests, is required to be eligible to drive Philabundance vehicles. Must meet all the applicable requirements as specified by the DOT.
  • Bend, stop, crouch, climb, stand, sit, walk, and turn/pivot throughout an 8-hour shift, 5 days a week.
  • Move/lower, push/pull and carry objects/parcels no greater than 50 pounds; when moving/lowering, pushing/pulling, and carrying objects/parcels greater than 50 pounds use 2 people or mechanical.
  • Move packages to heights above shoulder and lower to foot level.
  • Ability to work inside a freezer with a temperature in the range of -10 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit as well as in a humid warehouse.
  • Ability to operate pallet jack, both manual and power, and ride jack to load/unload trucks as needed.
  • Reach, grasp, and maintain control of items and materials used to perform activities associated with delivering and picking up packages.
  • Perform additional tasks using simple hand grasp, fine hand manipulation, and reach associated with assigned tasks such as keying.
  • Maintain a work pace aligned by meeting or exceeding piece per minute/production standards.
  • Work in an environment that will contain variable temperatures and humidity, outside weather conditions, exposure to noise, dust/dirt, confined work areas.
  • Must meet all the applicable requirements as specified by OSHA.
  • See, hear, and speak with sufficient capability to perform assigned tasks and maintain proper safety conditions.
  • Maintain an acceptable work pace and align with required personal and team deadlines. Must meet goals.
  • Demonstrate cognitive ability to: provide direction as well as follow directions and routines, work independently with appropriate judgment, read words and numbers, concentrate, memorize, recall, identify logical connections and determine sequence of response, process proactively and identify near and long-term future needs as well as evaluate problems and escalate/inform management as is necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience moving food, frozen, fresh or shelf stored, with interaction to public.
  • Previous experience operating a forklift and pallet jacks, safely and effectively.
  • Previous experience working within a defined operating system, follow directions, consistent placement, and tracking.
  • Warehouse experience moving food preferred. Previous experience with a forklift, pallet jack and other equipment used to move products a plus.
  • Knowledge of the Philadelphia region.
  • Delivery, pick up with Inventory, Shipping/Receiving experience.
  • Previous experience operating a forklift and pallet jacks, safely and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Travel in all neighborhoods in the inner city and suburbs, must be able to use maps, GPS and identify delivery and pick up locations.
  • Proactively approaches customer needs, pick up and drop off requirements.
  • Follow all applicable laws and standards related as specified by DOT, safe driving.
  • Perform pre- and post-inspections of the vehicle according to specified check list.
  • Deliver or pick up food, in a safe manner, to predetermined locations according to designated schedule.
  • Provide a high level of positive customer service to Philabundance contacts; communicate with customers/volunteers in a courteous manner and respect agency personnel and clientele.
  • Load and unload vans or other vehicles. Abide by designated procedures with strong attention to safety and accurate tracking.
  • Physical tasks such as moving food, equipment, and boxes.
  • Support the shipping and receiving function as needed.
  • Complete related tracking process with accuracy and detail.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle and appropriate documentation.
  • Required to always wear uniform and safety gear.
  • Support and align with Philabundance Pillars. Ensure communications, actions and interactions reflect a positive focus on People, Professionalism, Partnerships and Progress.
  • Operate forklift and pallet jack if certified and available for larger shipments.
  • Warehouse duties as assigned.
