About The Position

This position is an on-campus, part-time, up-to 19-hour appointment based in Champaign, Illinois. This is a pooled position, which means applications are accepted year-round. When an opening becomes available, qualified applicants from the pool may be contacted for interviews. The purpose of the Bus and CDL Driver position is to ensure the safe and reliable operation of Parkland College vehicles while transporting students, faculty, staff, athletic teams, and student organizations to a variety of events. The primary responsibility of this role is to skillfully drive and maneuver fleet vehicles to assigned destinations, prioritizing passenger safety and punctuality. The Bus and CDL Driver is a part-time, non-exempt, 19 hours-or-less appointment. Weekends and weekday evenings may be required in response to Parkland College events, Athletic events, community activities, and other college-sponsored activities. Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement.
  • A clean driving record as verified by an MVR.
  • A commitment to safe driving.
  • Prospective new hires will successfully complete a post offer, pre-employment criminal background check with fingerprinting. The background check review includes, but is not limited to, FMSCA compliant driving and safety performance history, and exclusionary offenses per the Illinois School Code and Title IV of the Higher Education Act.
  • Must pass an IDOT drug screen and physical and meet IDOT driving standards (CDL Drivers are subject to random drug tests per IDOT regulations).
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions, squat, lift, move, push, and pull heavy objects, climb in and out of the vehicle, stand for long periods of time, and operate controls and equipment.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to listen effectively and respond accordingly.
  • Must be available to travel throughout Parkland College District 505 and out of district travel that may require staying overnight at location.
  • In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe operation of vehicles from Parkland College’s fleet, including those listed below: 34 passenger bus-air brakes 22 passenger bus-mechanical brakes 15 passenger van 11 passenger van
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure they are in good working order. Report any maintenance issues to Public Safety.
  • Plan and follow efficient routes to minimize travel time and fuel consumption, avoiding underpasses under 13’ 6” clearance.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations, traffic laws, and Parkland College policies.
  • Maintain accurate logs of working hours and vehicle service records.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork and documentation accurately and on time.
  • Other duties as assigned.
