The Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI), Educator provides educational support to the corporate wide clinical documentation improvement program in an effort to improve accuracy and quality in the patient’s medical record and to ensure that diagnoses are an accurate reflection of the patient’s clinical status and care. The CDI Educator is responsible for providing new hire orientation, mentoring, and on-going education to the CDI team as well as to provide specialty-specific education to physicians and targeted service lines. Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved school of nursing or medical school.
  • Maintains current State of Florida RN license or valid eNLC multistate RN license.
  • Must maintain current one of the following:
  • Certified Documentation Specialist (CCDS) by the Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists
  • Clinical Documentation Improvement Professional (CDIP) by The American Health Information Management Association
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Three (3) years of clinical experience in hospital setting with extensive clinical knowledge and understanding of pathology/physiology.
  • Three (3) years previous acute care clinical documentation improvement specialist experience required.
  • Extensive clinical knowledge and understanding of pathology/physiology; best demonstrated by clinical experience in hospital setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM/PCS, APR DRG and MS DRG, Mortality, PSI/ECRI and HAC required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to write concisely and effectively when communicating with providers.
  • Knowledge of age-specific patient needs and the elements of disease processes and related procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and provide new hire training and orientation program for new CDI Specialists as well as educational programs to address enhance the CDI team performance.
  • Maintain all department training materials, tools and/or records.
  • Develops and maintains SharePoint site with education topics, performance outcomes by facility and key areas for CDI.
  • Performs quality documentation auditsincluding chart review and query compliance of patient records to ensure CDI Specialists and providers are compliant with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Provide mentoring and ongoing feedback to the CDI Team.
  • Engages physicians/providers on CDI topics, attends monthly service line meetings.
  • Develops and presents key CDI topics at all service line meetings ongoing.
  • Monitors CDI performance and tracks CDI team knowledge through bi-annual assessment tests.
  • Develops and maintains CDI assessment tests and develops education around topics missed.
  • Provide education to the CDI team related to the annual regulatory updates and changes.
  • Collaborate with the site Physician Liaisons in the development and delivery of specialty specific education to physicians.
  • Evaluate Second Level Review audits for areas of opportunity and develop education sessionsto enhance the CDI team performance and/or physician documentation both as a group and individually to ensure CDI success.
  • Represent the CDI team at various Orlando Health meetings as a clinical documentation improvement subject matter expert.
  • Coordinate with other departments (e.g., Coding/Quality) regarding CDI to ensure efforts are synchronized, consistent, and effective.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities related to the operational processes for the Documentation Improvement Team as well as related organizational/departmental goals.
  • Develop collaborative relationships and promote team work with co-workers, physicians and other departments.
  • Collaborate with external CDI consultants to determine any education gaps or opportunities identified via external reporting, internal reporting, chart reviews, etc.
  • Conducts initial and follow-up concurrent reviews on targeted admissions for opportunities to clarify documentation in the medical record for accurate reflection of the acuity of the patient and justifying the level of care.
  • Coordinates with coding, HIM, Care Management and other departments to achieve a record that reflects the acuity of the patient and level of care provided.
  • Review medical record concurrently for documentation not yet in the record but supported by clinical indicators. Performs a thorough chart review to identify co-morbidities/complications, and documents these appropriately within the concurrent CDS worksheet. Discusses the appropriate principle diagnosis of the patient with the providers.
