About The Position

The Brand Inspector position at the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) is responsible for protecting the livestock industry from theft, illegal butchering, and straying of livestock. This role involves physically inspecting livestock and alternative livestock offered for sale, transport, or slaughter to ensure valid legal title. The inspector will also manage documentation, maintain state property, and collaborate with law enforcement on investigations related to livestock ownership and compliance with state regulations.

Requirements

• Two years of full-time experience working with cattle or equivalent voluntary experience on a family ranch.
• Valid Colorado Driver's License.
• Ability to read brands on livestock.
• Ability to work a varied schedule including evenings and weekends.
• Physical ability to move with agility around livestock and climb gates or fences.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with horses.
• Good math skills.
• Basic computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office products.

Responsibilities

• Physically brand inspect livestock and alternative livestock prior to sale, transport, or slaughter.
• Implement proper use, care, and maintenance of the state assigned vehicle and other division property.
• Schedule inspection appointments for efficient service delivery.
• Audit proof of ownership documents to certify legal title or possession of livestock.
• Issue inspection certificates and compile permanent records of inspection activities.
• Compute and reconcile inspection fees and related charges.
• Investigate estray livestock to certify legal ownership and compliance with statutes.
• Collaborate with local law enforcement on investigations and assist in brand prosecution cases.
