About The Position

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Biosciences Research Center (PBRC), Center for Conservation Research and Training (CCRT) and the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $3,012 - $4,420/Mon. DUTIES: Assists the Oahu Wildlife Program in management, coordination of operations and maintenance activities in Oahu's wildlife and seabird sanctuaries, public hunting areas, and game management areas in a manner consistent with the DOFAW statewide wildlife program. Provides assistance to the Wildlife Manager in charge of the Oahu district program field operations, on trails, roads, fences, water units, hunter checking stations and storage facilities. Assists with the development and coordination of viable volunteer program. Compiles permits, data and fiscal records in accordance with Wildlife Manager. Coordinates logistics for field operations, oversees Wildlife Technician Assistant, interns and volunteers and other lower-level, temporary Field Crew Assistants. Drives to project sites.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of manual labor or semi-skilled work experience, which includes at least three (3) months of natural resource management activities.
  • KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of Hawaiian biota, local game mammal and game bird species, and threats from alien species to native ecosystems.
  • ABILITIES & SKILLS: Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Identification of game mammal and game bird species.
  • Identification of common native and introduced plants.
  • Ability to read maps and aerial photographs.
  • Ability to work with small-mechanized equipment in a safe manner (chainsaws, etc.).
  • Ability to calculate herbicide formulations and follow label instructions of herbicides used in controlling incipient weeds.
  • Ability to plan jobs with details and make necessary preparations to accomplish work assignments.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.
  • Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.
  • Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment.
  • Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire.
  • Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee's initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
  • PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Ability to work on small boats in coastal near-shore waters.
  • Must be a strong swimmer.
  • Must be able and willing to physically perform, efficiently and effectively under strenuous outdoor conditions (e.g. extreme weather, mosquitoes, steep terrain, etc.).
  • Must be able to be transported to remote locations via helicopter.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted.
  • POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings. Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Resource Management or related field.
  • Experience in use of pesticides and power tools.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with data analysis and presentation.
  • Field experience in an active resource or management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere.
