About The Position

Regular, Part-Time to Full-Time (50-100% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Biosciences Research Center (PBRC), Center for Conservation Research and Training (CCRT), Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), located in Lihue, Kauai. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $1,733.33 - $4,333.33/Mon. (@50-100% FTE) DUTIES: Responsible for creating, implementing, and maintaining the Kaua¿i DOFAW Forestry Program GIS and database. Oversees processing and analysis of drone imagery for the program's monitoring efforts, including forest health assessments, Rapid ¿Ohi¿a Death (ROD) initiatives, and other resource management applications. Coordinates with field staff on data collection standards and best practices to ensure accurate, consistent, and usable spatial information. Collaborates with partnering agencies as a member of the Kaua¿i Watershed Alliance to support landscape-scale natural resource management and watershed protection planning. Assists supervisor in tracking and reporting on areas where herbicide treatment and invasive species control have been implemented by field crews, maintaining accurate spatial data/ records, and assisting with the creation of internal and external reports. Creates and maintains maps, figures, dashboards, and other geospatial products to support internal reporting, decision-making, outreach, and public-facing materials. Is responsible for the tracking of program tools, equipment, herbicide inventory records, and scheduling and planning of program activities in coordination with field staff.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION: High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalent.
  • EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years of experience natural resource management or a related field which includes one to two (1-2) years of GIS or data management experience with ESRI geodatabases and ESRI online platforms.
  • KNOWLEDGE: Knowledgeable in GIS and database management and ESRI field application programs.
  • Knowledge of Native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species to native ecosystems.
  • Knowledge of invasive species removal and ungulate/predator control methods.
  • Knowledgeable of current Forest Health issues on Kauai.
  • ABILITIES & SKILLS: Ability to develop ESRI based surveys, field applications, databases and dashboards to track all natural resource management activities.
  • Ability to perform drone and satellite imagery analysis.
  • Ability to create maps and reports using raw data collected from field staff.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  • Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's Degree or higher from an accredited community college in the fields of Forestry, Wildlife Management, Natural Resource Management or related field.
  • Experience with ESRI field applications and database management systems.
  • Experience using drones.
  • Field experience in an active resource or management program to protect ecosystems on Kauai.
  • Experience working with and coordinating volunteer and environmental education projects.
