About The Position

Home Care Aides (HCA) ease the burden of care from family and friends of the elderly or disabled who need extra support in daily functioning. Common duties include assisting with basic household chores, personal hygiene services, cooking meals and providing emotional support and companionship, and other related support services essential to the participant’s health. The HCA observes documents and reports all changes to the homecare supervisor.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a phone or a way to communicate with the office daily.
  • Physical ability to bend, stoop, kneel, squat, twist, reach, pull and lift heavy objects. Must be able to climb stairs several times a day.
  • Must adhere to agency’s non-discrimination policies.
  • Must have a clear background check which includes fingerprinting through the IDPH Health Care Worker Registry and HFS OIG.
  • Must adhere to agency’s non-discrimination policies.
  • High School diploma or general education diploma; or one year of employment in a comparable human service capacity, or experience in care for a dependent child or adult family member; or demonstration of continued progress towards meeting the educational requirement of a general education diploma by current registration and evidence of successful completion (C grade or better) of course work.
  • New employees shall receive and successfully complete 24 hours of initial pre-service training, including agency orientation of not more than 2 hours, prior to assignment to provide services to a CCP participant.
  • HCA must pass competency evaluation conducted by RFS which includes all in-home services topics as mandated by the State of Illinois Joint Committee on Administrative Rules.
  • Thereafter there is a minimum of 12 hours per calendar year of mandatory training for all homecare aids.
  • Ongoing training includes topics listed in the Illinois Joint Committee on Administrative Rules in addition to other topics as management deems necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Adherence to a participant’s written Plan of Care, performance of duties as assigned by Homecare Supervisor, to include observation, reporting and documentation of client status and of the service provided.
  • Maintenance of a clean, safe and healthy environment.
  • Home management tasks include housekeeping, laundry (may be required to iron a piece of clothing or sew a button), shopping and errands. In performance of essential shopping and running errands must provide the necessary receipts and money transaction documentation to participant and agency.
  • Prepare and serve meals and/or simple modified diets according to instruction and assist with feeding as necessary.
  • Personal care tasks for participants that are not medical in nature, such as, personal grooming, shaving, hair shampooing and combing, bathing to include sponge bath, shower bath or tub bath, toileting/use of bedpan, commode or toilet, assistance with getting dressed, nail care (filing), respiratory services according to policy, brushing and cleaning teeth or dentures.
  • Assist with lifting participant out of bed, positioning/transferring participant and ambulation including use of cane, walker, and wheelchair or other use of specific adaptive equipment.
  • Assist self-directing participant with medication reminders or refilling of prescription at local pharmacy as specified in plan of care.
  • Provide routine skin care that includes ensuring skin is properly clean and dried after bathing and/or incontinence circumstances. Assist with the change of disposable diapers.
  • Assist self-directing participants in reminding them of their home maintenance exercise/range of motion programs.
  • Adherence to the Electronic Verification Visit policy.
  • Maintenance and documentation of records of daily activities, observations, and direct hours of service are submitted to Homecare Supervisor on a biweekly basis.
  • Attendance to pre-service training, ongoing in-service training sessions and staff conferences/meetings as required.
