About The Position

This position will serve as the Cutler Botanic Gardens (CBG) Summer Horticulture Assistant for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Broome County. The CBG Summer Horticulture Assistant will assist Extension staff and Master Gardeners in maintaining Cutler Botanic Gardens. Duties include cultural practices including planting, weeding, watering and propagating. Position will interact with Master Gardeners and may assist the horticulturist in class preparation. They will also be responsible for serving as wedding security. Requirements

  • High school or college, with course work in one of the following fields—plant science, environmental sciences, biology, plant pathology or entomology.
  • Able to reach sites away from principal place of business; mileage reimbursed in accordance with CCE-BC policies.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

  • Individual who is efficient with good observation skills and a desire to learn horticultural practices.

Responsibilities

  • Duties include, but not limited to: mowing, planting, weeding, watering and propagating.
  • Providing access to gardens during weekend weddings and providing security during weddings.
  • In cooperation with supervisor and/or Issue Leader, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
  • Support the association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
