About The Position

Cathodic Protection Technician (Coastal Plants – Alabama & Mississippi) Southern Company Services, Technical Shared Services – Electrical Systems Group WORK LOCATION & TRAVEL This position will support our Alabama and Mississippi coastal region power generation plants so the successful candidate will need to reside within a reasonable commute distance to this area (Gulfport, MS to Mobile, AL). Our main reporting office is in Birmingham, AL, so after initial training, the Technician will support the Southern Company plants in the southeast area with a major focus for Alabama and Mississippi coastal region. This position will require frequent travel (approximately 75%) – primarily within the Alabama/Mississippi coast region. This work will require some overnight travel. Overtime work will be required periodically to support customer schedules. This position can be filled with a Non-Exempt Level 4-9, depending upon the skills and experience of the successful candidate. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Primary duties are to support power plant installation and maintenance of Cathodic Protection (CP) systems. Duties include: Maintaining and troubleshooting existing CP systems. Installation of new CP systems and existing CP system components, including general knowledge of CP design/types and material acquisition. Inspect CP contractors work including quality control to meet company installation specifications. Commissioning of new and existing CP systems. This includes knowledge of CP electrical test equipment and tools for monitoring adequacy of CP systems. Periodic testing of a multitude of plant CP systems per company requirements. Provide plant site inspection of CP systems including follow-up reports, data collection using formatted Excel spreadsheets, ability to comprehend plant design drawings, and maintain company documentation practices. Experience with working around energized electrical equipment and with PPE requirements. Some familiarity with AC mitigation systems and knowledge of the rigors of working around buried pipes near energized busses/overhead transmission lines. Ability to locate ground faults or pipe isolation failures and inspect CP rectifiers. Physically able to perform work outdoors under occasional harsh plant conditions (e.g. hot/cold weather, construction site activity, etc.). Must be able to adapt to changing work environment, be able to lift 50 pounds, drive company truck, and work independently. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education & Certification(s): A two-year technical degree or at least one year of relevant working experience is required. AMPP CP1 – Tester certification is preferred. Applicant must be willing to attend formal training of cathodic protection equal to the level of AMPP CP1 & CP2 – Technician. Experience: Experience working on electrical equipment in a heavy industrial environment is required. A minimum of one year experience with surveying CP system operation is desired. General familiarity with AMPP Standards for controlling corrosion with cathodic protection systems High degree of familiarity with use of electrical test equipment and procedures Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Ability to use typical computer applications Ability to work independently and the ability to meet schedules. Ability to communicate diplomatically at all working and management levels. Must have good problem solving and analytical skills for troubleshooting CP systems. The successful candidate must be able to work with limited supervision, and able to perform successfully in an individual and team environment.
