About The Position

The University of Hawai'i is seeking part-time English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructors for casual hire appointments within the Outreach College, International Programs. These positions are temporary and are intended for short-term, part-time, non-credit instructors. The roles are contingent upon registration, position availability, course offerings, departmental need, and funding. Successful candidates will be placed in the instructor applicant pool for 2025 and future semesters. The instructors will prepare for and teach ESL classes to international students, following curriculum guidelines that may include various skill areas such as grammar, listening, writing, and TOEFL preparation. Other responsibilities include assisting with placement testing, preparing lesson plans, and conducting educational activities with students.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in ESL/SLS or related field, or Master's degree in ESL/SLS within one semester of completion required for 10-week NICE and some special programs.
  • Bachelor's Degree in ESL/SLS or related field for 3-week NICE and other programs.
  • Minimum of three years of successful, recent full-time experience teaching ESL in a classroom setting.
  • Experience in ESL curriculum development.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English commensurate with a teacher's role as a language model.
  • A well-rounded, extensive knowledge of, and experience with, American culture.
  • Understanding of, and respect for, a culturally diverse student population.

  • Demonstrated successful experience in teaching intensive English courses.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for and teach English-as-a-second-language classes (online or in-person) to international students according to curriculum guidelines.
  • Assist with placement testing and student orientation.
  • Prepare daily lesson plans and create teaching materials.
  • Participate in faculty meetings.
  • Advise and evaluate students.
  • Conduct off-campus or virtual educational activities with students.
