The Aquaculture Technician position at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo is a part-time temporary role focused on supporting the Pacific Aquaculture & Coastal Resources Center (PACRC). The technician will work closely with PACRC staff to develop and implement aquaculture and environmental research and education programs aimed at a diverse audience, primarily in Hawaii and potentially across the Pacific. This role involves collaboration with faculty, administration, and other personnel to ensure the smooth operation of the PACRC, which includes managing facilities, conducting tours, and overseeing the security of the premises. The technician will be responsible for managing and supervising various areas of the PACRC, including the building, wet laboratory, tanks, and storage areas. This includes maintaining a clean and safe environment, scheduling the use of PACRC facilities, and monitoring security. The role also involves supervising non-RCUH PACRC support personnel and student employees, which includes training, scheduling, and evaluating their performance. The technician will manage the PACRC facilities budget, control expenditures, and maintain accurate financial records while purchasing supplies and managing inventory. In addition to administrative duties, the technician will conduct daily husbandry for all PACRC aquatic organisms, monitor water quality, and ensure the health and feeding of various species, including freshwater fish, marine fish, invertebrates, and microalgae. The technician will also assist with laboratory analysis, improve safety plans, enforce health regulations, and ensure compliance with government regulations. The position requires the ability to troubleshoot problems, implement standard operating procedures, and assist with inspections related to research compliance. The technician will also be involved in constructing facilities and coordinating construction projects as needed.
