About The Position

The Cast Technician is responsible for applying, maintaining, and removing casts for patients with fractures or orthopedic conditions under the supervision of a physician or orthopedic specialist. This role also involves educating patients on proper cast care and ensuring a safe, hygienic environment for all procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Previous experience in an orthopedic or healthcare setting is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy and orthopedic conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions carefully.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively with patients and medical staff.
  • Physical stamina to stand for long periods and assist with patient mobility.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office including Office 365, Excel and Word
  • Follows OSHA regulations and the safety guidelines of the Practice.
  • Follows HIPAA policies and procedures.
  • Respects and maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Uses time efficiently by prioritizing and planning work activities; is methodical and efficient in structuring tasks to be accomplished.
  • The ability to separate emotional feelings from the real issues at hand. The ability to legitimately and objectively challenge the substance of our beliefs and biases of our observations.

  • Anticipate lifting 20-25 pounds in any given day. Lifting up to 40-50 pounds may occasionally be required, depending on the specific style or type of care provided.
  • In the performance of certain patient care tasks, the Cast Tech may be expected to have sufficient manual dexterity in order to safely perform various skills and techniques.
  • Tasks and expectations may vary by clinical site and medical practice.
  • May be exposed to acutely ill patients, communicable diseases or blood borne pathogens.

  • Certification as a Cast Technician (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Apply and remove casts for patients based on physician orders, ensuring proper technique and alignment.
  • Prepare materials and tools needed for casting procedures, including plaster, fiberglass, and bandages.
  • Monitor patients during the casting process to ensure comfort and safety.
  • Provide patient education on proper care of casts, including keeping the cast dry, managing skin irritation, and recognizing complications such as infections or circulation issues.
  • Assist in taking patient history and performing pre-procedure assessments.
  • Remove old or damaged casts and assist with the application of new ones.
  • Perform basic wound care as needed under the supervision of a physician.
  • Assist with the preparation and setup of orthopedic tools and equipment for examinations or surgeries.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and ensure proper documentation of all casting procedures.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and sterilization of equipment and supplies.
  • Follow all safety protocols and infection control practices.
  • Assist physicians or other medical professionals during exams or procedures as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
