About The Position

This position works with relatives raising children in Alaska, parents/families of VOA Alaska clients, as well as service providers who work with those families. Under supervision, the Case Manager will expand support services for VOA Alaska families. This program will be serving families outside of the Family Services Department (i.e. OP, ARCH, School Based Services, etc.), and this position will support families across the service array. This position is required to engage adults and children in the intake and planning process for services that impact their health and wellbeing, (i.e. linking to services, respite, support groups, skills building, etc.) VOA Alaska is a youth-serving organization providing prevention, early intervention, treatment, and recovery supports to youth and families struggling with mental illness and addiction. Requirements

  • If VOA Alumni, discharged from active client status for 1 year.
  • Group facilitation: Strong communication skills and planning ability, proficient with Zoom and related technology, and ability to teach in front of a group and individuals;
  • Communication: Communicates in writing and orally with linguistic and cultural proficiency (e.g. using age-appropriate materials, incorporating images);
  • Child Welfare Knowledge: Intermediate knowledge of child welfare regulations and regulatory agencies;
  • Problem solving: Takes a systematic approach to solving problems rather than reacting to systems;
  • Teamwork ability: Job requires preferring to work with others rather than alone, and being personally connected with others on the job, to include community partners;
  • Taking initiative: Identifying what needs to be done and executing it before being asked or before the situation requires;
  • Empathy: The ability to listen efficiently and accurately enough to understand another’s situation and point of view;
  • Creativity/Innovation: Fosters and initiates new ideas, methods, and solutions;
  • Analytical thinking: The ability to tackle a problem using a logical, systematic, and sequential approach;
  • Cultural sensitivity: Addresses the diversity of individuals and populations when implementing policies, programs, and services that affect the health of families, while being culturally sensitive to the needs of multi-cultural communities;
  • Technology proficient: Proficiency with basic computer operations, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, and other similar systems;
  • Flexibility: Ability to work flexible hours (including days, evenings, and some weekend hours).
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work; or a similar field with experience in case management and coordination of services, or two years’ experience in social work or a similar field with experience in case management, coordination of services and community service.
  • Experience using strength-based case management and either knowledge of Trauma Informed Care or willingness to be trained
  • A current and valid driver’s license
  • Can qualify for VOA’s automobile insurance and/or proof of vehicle insurance coverage
  • Reliable transportation and ability to transport clients in personal vehicle
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Has qualifications to be a Qualified Addiction Professional or Peer Support Specialist as defined by the State of Alaska. If not current, can be achieved within 3 years of hire.
  • Qualified Addiction Professional (QAP): Chemical Dependency Certification level II (CDC II) and/or National Certificated Addiction Counselor I (NCAC I)
  • Peer Support Specialist (PSS): The ability to self-identify as someone who has lived experience of recovery from mental illness and/or addiction.

Responsibilities

  • Willingness to develop strong relationships, and ability to demonstrate patience, compassion, and empathy for families.
  • Develop a strong working knowledge of the roles, permanency options, needs and services for relative caregivers and their families. Will demonstrate strong initiative in developing this knowledge through individual research, effective partnerships with kinship caregivers, and participation in trainings on topics relevant to kinship care at the program, agency, and community levels.
  • Provide care coordination to link families to resources that will improve health (utilities, rent, clothing, food, furniture, health, and mental health needs, etc.).
  • Functions as a member of the clinical team and works collaboratively with all treatment team members to ensure assessments, treatment plans, and case plans are complete and effective.
  • Plan and facilitate weekly support group in collaboration with the Family Services Program Manager.
  • Plans and facilitates monthly Educational Workshops and Family Engagement activities. This will include, but is not limited to, researching and identifying topics, developing agendas and activities for each meeting, preparing materials needed for meetings, implementing the Strengthening Families framework for meetings.
  • Provide education and training to families, inside the home and in the community.
  • Attend assigned trainings to build skills and competencies related to family support services.
  • Document services provided to clients, including support groups, educational workshops, case management, and therapeutic services for all enrolled families.
  • Completes clinical documentation as mandated by agency policies, Medicaid regulations, CARF standards and the Division of Behavioral Health grant conditions.
  • Coordinate and provide community-based respite activities for caregivers.
  • Provide transportation to clients as needed. This may include transporting clients to appointments, events, or any other location that may support their treatment goals. When using personal vehicle for client support, staff will be reimbursed at VOAAK’s approved reimbursement rate based on the IRS recommendations.
  • Submit program reports to the Family Services Program Manager for grant reporting.
