Since 1971, the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided a comprehensive continuum of high-quality, essential, and community-based services to citizens of the Peninsula who are living with a mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders. HNNCSB partners with both Hampton and Newport News General District Courts as part of separate dockets. BHDs are non-adversarial approaches by the judicial system, treatment providers, and other stakeholders addressing the needs of individuals with serious mental illness who have become involved in the criminal justice system. Through on-going support and supervision, the Court and Team assist individuals as they engage in services and address challenges to prevent further penetration within the criminal justice system.

Requirements

  • Thorough understanding of the courts and criminal justice system
  • Familiarity with social casework principles and techniques
  • Effective communication skills
  • Empathy
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Bachelor's degree in human services such as Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or Counseling
  • One (1) year experience in case management services
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License
  • Successfully pass a criminal history fingerprint background investigation
  • Successfully pass a DMV record check
  • Successfully pass a Child Registry search
  • Successfully pass a drug screening test
  • Successfully pass employment reference checks

Responsibilities

  • Support individuals living with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and Serious and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) to achieve and maintain optimal functioning within their community
  • Conduct in-depth assessments of clients' needs and strengths
  • Connect clients to essential community services
  • Outreach
  • Treatment planning
  • Advocacy
  • Counseling
  • Crisis intervention
  • Serve as a key liaison to the criminal justice system
  • Collaborate with clients, families, and service providers to assess eligibility and facilitate access to services
  • Prepare mental status and social assessments
  • Respond to inquiries regarding resources for individuals dealing with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, and co-occurring disorders
