Case Investigator, Bureau of Communicable Diseases
About The Position
The Division of Disease Control's mission is to safeguard the health of New Yorkers through identification, surveillance, treatment, control, and prevention of infectious diseases, which is achieved through varied and interrelated endeavors of its seven Bureaus. The Bureau of Communicable Disease (BCD) monitors and analyzes trends in disease data and provides consultation to the medical community and the public on the recognition, prevention, and control of communicable diseases. BCD is responsible for the surveillance, prevention, and control of over 70 infectious diseases including foodborne, enteric, waterborne, respiratory (including COVID-19), zoonotic, and vector-borne diseases.
Requirements
- High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.
Responsibilities
- Manage incoming telephone inquiries from healthcare providers and the general public
- Build and maintain directory of internal agency contacts and community partners.
- Assist with community outreach, public health education and prevention initiatives
- Oversee monthly schedule of staff performing telephone triage of BCD's main telephone number
- Perform data entry of disease reports, case investigation, and outbreak data forms into a surveillance database.
- Liaise with commercial laboratories to ensure specimens are sent to public health laboratories
- Compile and prepare materials for mass mailings to healthcare providers and patients
- Participate in special projects.
- Assist BCD staff, as assigned.
