About The Position

The Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies offers a two-year residential fellowship for pre-doctoral students (ABD) focusing on African American and African Diasporic Studies. This fellowship requires relocation to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, where fellows will join a cohort of interdisciplinary scholars. The program provides funding, a stipend, health insurance, and allowances for research and travel-related expenses.

Requirements

  • Must be a pre-doctoral student (ABD) focusing on African American and African Diasporic Studies.
  • Must be eligible for the fellowship without restriction as to citizenship or current residence.
  • Must complete a background check upon offer.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in interdisciplinary research related to African American, Caribbean, Latin American, African, and/or Diasporic contexts.

Responsibilities

  • Relocate to the University of Virginia for the duration of the fellowship.
  • Participate in workshops held during the academic year.
  • Present research work periodically to the academic community.
  • Consult with the Director of the Woodson Institute regarding additional employment or fellowship opportunities.
