About The Position

The Carpenter's Assistant at Audubon Zoo will assist with the day-to-day carpentry requests and maintenance of both indoor and outdoor areas of the facility, ensuring a safe and aesthetically pleasing experience for guests and employees. The role involves acting autonomously and professionally, receiving work requests, creating sketches for jobs, estimating material requirements, and operating woodworking tools. Responsibilities also include erecting furniture, repairing property, maintaining shop equipment, and assisting with signage installation. The position requires flexibility in working hours and a willingness to participate in continuing education.

Requirements

  • Ability to use mobile devices, computer, fax, scanner, phone, and copy machine.
  • Proficient in operating trailer, forklift, saws, impact guns, and other tools.
  • Ability to work long hours and handle stress appropriately.
  • Exposure to high, medium, or low noise intensity.
  • Constant contact with co-workers.
  • Affinity for animals preferred.
  • Exposure to fluctuations in temperatures and outdoor conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with day-to-day carpentry requests and maintenance.
  • Receive work requests and create sketches for jobs.
  • Estimate material requirements, tools, and costs for projects.
  • Set up and operate woodworking tools.
  • Erect furniture including cabinets, shelves, and animal enclosures.
  • Repair and replace property such as carpet and door locks.
  • Maintain carpenter shop equipment.
  • Assist with building and installing signage.
  • Recommend changes and solutions to facilities-related issues.
  • Report safety concerns to the Facilities Director.
  • Follow all guidelines regarding Zoo and Park operations.
  • Participate in continuing education classes as needed.
