About The Position

Responsible for maintaining, constructing, installing, and repairing structures, fixtures, furniture, and other items related to facilities. This position requires proficiency in all aspects of light construction, including carpentry, painting, and general make-ready work for the Dallas Zoo.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must have two or more years of experience and/or knowledge of all aspects of carpentry.
  • Must possess the ability to be trained in the operation of equipment and machinery related to the job.
  • Knowledge of residential and commercial construction.
  • Knowledge of remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety.
  • Ability to read prints.
  • Knowledge of local (city & state) building codes.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills to work effectively with others.
  • Must have good observational skills.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull, bend, climb stairs and ladders, lift and carry 80lbs.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, nights, or evenings as needed.
  • Successful candidates must pass pre-employment drug screening, background check and TB test.

Responsibilities

  • Complete tasks assigned by the manager through verbal or written instructions.
  • Fabricate, construct, and repair various types of structures with necessary materials, including wood, metal, and plastic.
  • Utilize saws, drills, impact drivers, sanders, and other power tools for repairs, maintenance, and fabrication.
  • Use levels, lasers, framing squares, and surveying equipment as necessary.
  • Ensure all completed work meets high standards, quality, specifications, and is code compliant.
  • Operate various equipment, including power tools, material handling devices, lifts, and earth movers.
  • Maintain cleanliness and proper operation of the shop, tools, and equipment as required.
  • Assist other trades and departments as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
