About The Position

JOB SUMMARY The Carpenter, under the supervision of the Field Manager, is responsible for the maintenance and operation of windows, doors, and repair or replacement of rotted wood, plastic, and fiberglass surfaces. The Carpenter also installs walls, doors, windows, and other structural and aesthetic components throughout Williamsburg Landing, including individual living units, ensuring repairs and structural changes meet applicable safety standards and building codes. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Supports all matters pertaining to construction and repair carpentry Plans construction, carpentry installations and changes; coordinates with other Facilities staff to ensure that allowance is made for electrical, plumbing, or HVAC needs Designs, builds, and installs architectural components such as pillars, cornices, and moldings Installs and maintains doors, windows, locking systems, and set-up of safe Replaces rotted wood and repairs leaking roofs; reports evidence of damage from rain, rodents, or termites Conducts structural and interior inspections and repairs Completes assorted maintenance work orders as assigned Keeps work site clean; ensures complete clean-up of work area at end of each workday Maintains appropriate inventory, tools, and equipment on truck; requests additional materials on an as-needed basis; maintains inventory, tools, and equipment in good working order; ensures waste is kept to a minimum Polices buildings regularly, identifies improperly operating equipment or components, and develops repair or replacement plans Informs Manager of problems concerning the upkeep of the buildings Ensures that a task is completed and that the resident knows the status of repairs to their residences; respects residents’ surroundings and works in a clean, neat and workman-like fashion Completes work order forms; maintains contact with Facilities Management office for reassignment to jobs throughout the workday Serves as member of disaster and emergency response teams; fulfills assigned role in fire drills and for snow removal Evaluates work processes and methods; submits recommendations for continuous quality improvement Maintains positive interaction with residents, guests, and other Williamsburg Landing employees Assumes on-call responsibility as assigned Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or equivalent, required
  • Three or more (3+) years’ experience in residential and commercial carpentry
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license
  • Knowledge of pertinent building codes and safety requirements
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the carpentry field
  • Ability to plan and construct small buildings and rooms within buildings
  • Ability to locate and repair building and roofing leaks
  • Ability to design and build cabinets, shelving, and architectural designs at the journeyman level
  • Ability to read blueprints and drawings
  • Ability to communicate effectively with senior adults experiencing differing levels of physical and cognitive challenges
  • Ability to use hand-held communication equipment effectively and responsibly
  • Ability to exercise sound professional judgment
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance, as the position requires adherence to project schedules and coordinated, time-sensitive work with other skilled trades
  • Ability to take call and work odd hours, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Ability to sustain hard work including, stooping, bending, reaching, climbing, crawling and other physical labor for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work overhead from ladders and at roof top heights for sustained periods of time
  • Ability to work full shifts outside exposed to outdoor weather conditions and temperature extremes
  • Ability to regularly and safely lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds

Responsibilities
