Perform carpenter work at the journeymen level in the plant facilities including fabrication, maintenance, repair and alteration of buildings and structures, using various carpenter hand tools, portable power tools, carpenter shop woodworking equipment, and standard measuring instruments. Primary functions include, fabrication, maintenance, repair, and alterations working from detailed designs, drawings, and oral instructions. Performs rough to finished carpentry work on buildings, office partitions, scaffolding, framework, floor tiles, ceiling tile, doors, windows, platforms, and trim. Operates tools such as electrical saws, routers, drills, planers, and hand and power tools. Makes shop computations relating to dimensions of work and selects necessary materials. Performs maintenance carpentry which involves performing repairs, installations, and general upkeep on the structures and fixtures of buildings. These activities include framing, finishing, and repairing elements like windows, doors, walls, floors, roofs, and furniture. Maintenance carpentry includes reoccurring preventative maintenance work, routine repairing and fixing of damaged or nonfunctional existing components, elements, doors, walls, ceilings, floors, or other structures restoring and returning them to normal operations and working conditions. Maintenance carpentry includes assembly, repairs, and installation of hardware, furniture and fixtures. Responsible for relocation or removal of office equipment and other materials not part of or fixed to the building (i.e., removing whiteboards, shelves, signage, partitions, assembled modules, which need to be taken apart or unbolted). Fabricating (not remodeling) wood, plastic, and composite system, including cabinets, work surfaces (e.g., workbenches, and office or cubicle countertops), and frames related to routine and recurring maintenance of existing facilities (e.g., wood stairs, decks, walkways over piping and mechanical equipment, and wooden dumpster ramps). Position Requirements Ability to follow Argonne procedures, OSHA , and safety requirements in the performance of work. Considerable knowledge of and skill in use of hand and power woodworking equipment and machinery, including but not limited to saws, planers, routers, radial arm saws, hand and portable power tools, and measuring devices. Good ability in reading and following design drawings and specifications. A working Carpenter knowledge and skill is attained through the equivalency of a high school diploma, four years as an apprentice and four years experience at the journeyman level.
