About The Position

Perform maintenance and construction on all building systems associated with the carpentry trade. Individual must have a strong knowledge of carpentry trade, shop machinery and an ability to read shop and field drawings. Follow all codes and procedures for carpentry trade. This is a Contract, union position within the BTC. The starting pay rate is $37.97/hour. Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of experience in the carpentry or related field.
  • Strong knowledge of carpentry trade, shop machinery, of codes and procedures for carpentry trade, and an ability to read shop and field drawings required.
  • Must have and maintain a valid US driver’s license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites.
  • Good customer relations, interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills.
  • Required to inspect and work in crawl spaces, attics, laboratories, ventilation equipment, mechanical rooms, mechanical shafts, sub basements and confined, isolated areas.
  • Access to these may be by ladder or scaffold tower on platforms up to 100’ high.
  • Risk exposure to asbestos, toxic vapors, heat, cold, height and accumulated dirt.
  • Use of employer provided safety equipment, including a respirator, is required.
  • Must be available to work overtime as duties require, including weekends. Possibility of shift work.
  • Must have ability to ascend and descend heights, have agility and freedom of movement, ability to climb stairs, ladders and scaffold, and ability to move easily in confined spaces.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Proficiency in cabinet making is required for employees assigned to related tasks.
  • Competency in operating large-scale woodworking machinery as assignments require.
  • Must belong to the local Carpenter Union or be willing to join within 30 days after starting employment at Cornell.

  • Apprentice certification desirable.
