About The Position

This position functions primarily as a member of a crew and is responsible for accomplishing highly skilled carpentry work in repair, maintenance, and restoration of new and historic structures. This position serves in the Craft Services Unit and reports to the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor II. Employees in this unit are required to achieve and maintain a higher-than-normal level of expertise, particularly when addressing carpentry issues concerning historic structure maintenance or repair. This position requires overnight travel.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma AND and two years of experience in the construction or remodeling of wooden structures or in furniture repair or construction; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be available to work the schedule of Monday - Thursday 7am - 5:30pm.
  • Must be able and comfortable working at heights, such as from scaffolding, ladders, aerial personnel lifts, and roofs.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces such as attics and crawl spaces while wearing a respirator.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be available for regular overnight travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials associated with the construction trades and experience and abilities necessary to independently perform at the sub-journey level or greater.
  • Demonstrated experience in carpentry or directly related at least two of the following: timber framing, historic structure restoration or architectural repairs, millwork replication, modern construction techniques, structural framing, cabinetry, exhibit fabrication, structural carpentry repairs, concrete form construction, roofing repairs and/or deck construction.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of building codes and/or ability to read blueprints and/or diagrams.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and/or assisting with organizing and prioritizing the work of crew members to manage multiple tasks and/or projects.

Responsibilities

  • Work in this class involves the performance of carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, alteration, and repair of buildings, or in fabricating and repairing a variety of wooden articles and equipment.
  • Work assignments are received from the foreman or other supervisor and are usually accompanied by sketches, specifications, or oral instructions; however, an employee in this class is required to perform work in accordance with established trade practices.
  • New or unusual work assignments are accompanied by detailed drawings or oral instructions, and any irregular or difficult work problems are resolved through discussion with the foreman.
  • Work is reviewed by a superior through inspection of completed work for quality and compliance with work orders.
