About The Position

The Carpenter I/II position is primarily responsible for performing both rough and finish carpentry to maintain, repair, and renovate university buildings and facilities. This position requires broad expertise in carpentry techniques, proficiency with relevant tools, and adherence to safety protocols.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • For Carpenter I: Two-year vocational/technical degree or equivalent training in carpentry, OR four years of hands-on experience as a carpenter.
  • For Carpenter II: Two-year vocational/technical degree or equivalent training in carpentry and four years of hands-on experience as a carpenter, OR eight years of hands-on experience as a carpenter.
  • Knowledge of industry standard safety procedures related to construction projects, use of tools, equipment, materials, personal protective equipment, etc.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Must be able to understand written and oral instructions and procedures.
  • Computer literacy.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to drive University vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in building construction industry.
  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Working knowledge of associated trades.
  • Lift Training/Certification.
  • 10-Hour OSHA Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Performs rough and finish carpentry work to repair and maintain university buildings, including repairing walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, stairs, and structural components.
  • Responds to work orders for general building maintenance and repairs.
  • Constructs, installs, and repairs custom cabinetry, shelving, countertops, and millwork.
  • Participates in renovation projects and new construction, including framing, installing drywall, insulation, doors, windows, and trim.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and schematics to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Estimates time, materials, and equipment needed for specific carpentry jobs.
  • Maintains accurate records of work orders, time sheets, and materials used.
  • Adheres to all university safety protocols and building codes.
  • Collaborates with other trades and facilities staff to coordinate project timelines and provide support to university events.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisor and university staff to provide project updates and resolve issues.
  • Performs duties of lead carpenter on assigned projects as the person on-site responsible for customer satisfaction, protection, cleanliness, safety, carpentry labor, and communication.
