About The Position

Carpenter-Flyperson oversees the maintenance, repair, preparation, load in, and running of all aspects of the fly-rail including the direction and oversight of I.A.S.T.E. crews in all theaters. Attendance is required at some meetings, and all required warehouse and all theater work calls. They report directly to the Production Manager. During performances and rehearsals, Carpenter-Flyperson also takes direction from and reports to the Principal Stage Manager and the Stage Manager.

Requirements

  • Minimum five years professional experience.
  • Leadership and management skills and the ability to work as a team member supporting others to accomplish goals.
  • Ability to manage load-in and show crew for large-scale productions.
  • Ability to produce/understand technical drawings as well as analyze and evaluate for quality, safety, and durability of product.
  • Working knowledge of safe stage rigging practices.
  • Ability to resolve problems in an efficient and diplomatic manner.
  • Proficiency with MS Office 365, Vectorworks, AutoCAD.
  • Valid applicable driver’s license.

  • Ability to drive a 16’ truck.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare logistical needs for all flying elements needed for Joffrey performances.
  • Oversee fly-rail operations for load in, set-up, operation, dismantling, and load out of all mainstage ballets produced at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, as well as for domestic and international tours.
  • Maintenance, upkeep, and repair of Joffrey scenic elements, ensuring items are safe to fly and up to OSHA standards.
  • Make sure all equipment is in good condition, prepared, and packed prior to load in.
  • Supervise venue I.A.T.S.E carpentry department crew members during onstage installation, operation, and strike of all theatrical scenic elements.
  • Develop a collaborative relationship with the Lyric Opera of Chicago staff and crew.
  • Coordinate crew calls and cutbacks with Production Manager and other department heads.
  • Track inventory and maintenance of scenic equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain up to date paperwork and/or computer files of all completed projects.
  • Assure organized, secure, and protective storage of scenic elements.
  • Assist with packing equipment, loading, and unloading trucks.
  • Ensure a safe, healthy, and clean work environment onstage, backstage, and in the storage areas for technicians, staff, and performers alike.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment at Joffrey facilities.
  • Report all unsafe conditions, accidents, and incidents immediately to the Production Manager.
  • Drive a truck when needed.
  • Other duties as required.
