POSITION SUMMARY Cut, fabricate, assemble, install, and/or repair a variety of wood structures and furnishings in marine vessels.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalence plus one or more years’ carpentry experience desired. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and appropriate tools to construct marine vessels.
  • Requires knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written, verbal, or diagram form.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Knowledge of safe operation and use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
  • Ability to read a tape measure.
  • Integrity, ethics, flexibility/adaptability, initiative, interpersonal skills, attention to detail, safety conscious, and multi-tasking.
  • Maintain the confidential integrity of details pertaining to Eastern Shipbuilding Group.

Responsibilities

  • Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends and holidays.
  • Comply with company, Federal, State, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations and policies while performing duties.
  • Assist in the repair of structural woodwork and replacement of defective parts and equipment using hand and power tools.
  • Assist in the construction of floors, doors, and partitions, using woodworking machines, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Assist in the layout and alignment of material in accordance with specifications.
  • Measure and cut materials to determine conformance to specifications.
  • Assist in the installation of permanent and temporary ladders and handrails.
  • Assist in the installation of sound dampening and ballasting materials.
  • Using approved material, prepare and place blocking material for vessel blocking.
  • Rig and flag cranes use hand signals to move material safely to desired locations.
  • Accountable for completion of daily work assignments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
