About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Holy Family Retreat Center Director and in accordance with established policies and procedures, provides ongoing maintenance of the facilities and grounds of Holy Family Retreat Center. This is a forty-hour per week position. Work hours for this position are from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Late afternoon/evening work may be necessary. Weekend work is expected when the center is in use. Should be available for emergency calls. This is an onsite caretaker position that provides housing onsite.

Requirements

  • Responsible for supervising all personnel, full-time and volunteer, for the above listed operational work.

  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must have a current valid Texas Driver’s License and must attend the Safe Environment Training and earn a certificate.
  • Developed skills in the following crafts: Carpentry, Electricity, plumbing and mechanics (automobile/machinery)
  • Knowledge of yard maintenance and equipment.
  • Landscaping knowledge.
  • Ability to plan preventative maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for making all purchases necessary for fulfillment of duties upon consultation with the Director.
  • Keep kitchen, office, and monastery supplied with cleaning and maintenance items
  • Responsible for making caretaker and assistant caretaker work schedule each day in accordance with work orders/priorities set by the Director.
  • Responsible for repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment on the property with emphasis on scheduled maintenance rather than repair. Responsible for all outside service people needed for this work.
  • At the direction of the Director, set up Hebert Hall for meetings and events.
  • Responsible for maintenance and development of grounds
  • Responsible for light maintenance on vehicles and equipment: staff cars, tractors, power tools, etc. (oil changes, changing batteries, etc.)
  • Responsible for maintaining an annual calendar of service repair and maintenance and maintaining a log of service on major appliances.
  • Responsible for security of grounds and buildings (including daily walk-through of buildings not in use.)
  • Responsible for collecting all garbage from complex as needed and for garbage dumpster.
  • Responsible for transport of heavy items on the grounds.
  • Responsible for attendance at staff meetings at request of Director.
  • Responsible for safety conditions in work areas.
  • Responsible for establishing a relationship with and keeping a written list of qualified outside professionals to handle maintenance emergencies beyond the scope of this job description.
  • Responsible for taking care of forested area of retreat center.
  • Perform room set-ups as necessary for groups using the HFC
  • Available on-call when the center is in use and for emergencies.
  • Maintain all drainage ditches for good flow
  • Responsible for cutting grass
  • Responsible for trimming (bordering) of all walks, buildings; plants and hedge trimming
  • Responsible for weeding (by hand)
  • Responsible for all planting (new plants from green house)
  • Fertilizes property for growth and bug control
  • Performance maintenance to mowers, weed-wackers, edgers, blowers and garden tools as necessary
  • Maintains green house
  • Responsible for cutting and removal of all dead trees dangerous to people
  • Responsible for timber cutting and control of pine beetles as well as other infestations
  • Responsible for cutting and trimming of growths on trees (vines, etc.)
  • Spraying of ant hills, spiders and termites (outside of buildings)
  • Spraying for ants, spiders and roaches (inside of buildings)
  • Light and floor bulb changes including changing of exit lights
  • Fluorescent light ballast changes
  • Exit Lights and Transformers upkeep and repairs
  • Maintain all light switches and receptacle to working order
  • Maintain all electric attic roof fans and ventilation motors
  • All outside pole lights (HFC owned)
  • Some minor electrical repairs on A/C (also changes filters regularly)
  • Electric ceiling fan repairs, hot water heater repairs (electric) and laundry
  • Maintain HFC well water system (over 40 acres)
  • Maintain city water system (indoor and outdoor)
  • Make all repairs to pipes during freezes
  • Keep clear all toilet sewer lines
  • All a/c drain lines (64 A/C units)
  • Maintain all walls, wall covering, doors, windows, roof, porches, walkways, cabinets, outside crosses, and any wood work as needed
  • Painting and varnishing
  • Furniture repairs
  • Perform all window glass replacement (also outside window cleaning)
  • Replacing guest house bathroom shower stalls as needed
  • Refinishing or replacing all doors as needed
  • Maintenance as necessary of roofs and gutters
  • Clean and wax all tile floors (buff when needed)
  • Carpet cleaning
  • Floor maintenance including stripping and waxing
  • Maintain washer and dryers in working order
  • Maintain shop area in working order
  • Maintain golf carts in working order
  • Order and maintain stock of all cleaning equipment and supplies
  • Order and keep soft drink machines full
  • Maintain the operating efficiency of all fire alarm systems and maintain inspection dates
  • Procurement of all materials needed to operate plant
  • Welding of broken chairs or anything else necessary
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Repair appliances, small and large
  • Road work as necessary when contractors replace sections of roads
  • Cutting out and replacing bad sections of sidewalks
  • Other related duties as assigned.
