About The Position

The position aims to reduce and eliminate barriers to adults' education by providing career and educational advising services to approximately 40 HiSET/GED high school equivalency students each trimester. The role involves problem-solving various issues such as housing, health, transportation, and daycare, while tracking student retention and intervening to keep students engaged in their education. The position is focused on ensuring increased career development planning and assessment for the Holyoke Community College Adult Learning Center, located at the Picknelly Adult and Family Education Center in Holyoke.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, social work or closely related field.
  • Three years' experience in career development/transition with Adult Basic Education or similar groups of students/clients.
  • Experience with one-on-one career advising and job development.
  • Ability to evaluate, audit, deduce, and/or assess data using established criteria.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Familiarity with web-based career development tools.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student population.

  • Master's Degree in related discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with program instructors and Coordinator, and other HCC staff to promote a seamless instruction and advising continuum leading to goal attainment.
  • Maintain and provide an advisory schedule/log with confidential case notes and make referrals to appropriate agencies.
  • Provide one-on-one career assessment, development, planning, and counseling services to a diverse population.
  • Guide students' development of individual career plans and maintain individual education and career files.
  • Conduct workshops on career exploration, goal setting, job search, and other career-related topics.
  • Use industry career maps and pathways to provide career services, including exploring careers and identifying training programs.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines on-campus to promote career-related workshops.
  • Meet one-on-one with students who have multiple absences to create a persistence plan and refer to support services.
  • Record calls or individual texts/reminders to students who are absent and provide updates to teachers about student issues.
  • Provide one-on-one assistance with job application forms, resume writing, and interview techniques.
  • Maintain walk-in resource materials for students and community members.
  • Compile student/community member data for reporting and assessment purposes.
  • Lead the Next Step team to advise students before and after the HiSET/GED tests.
  • Maintain and update LACES waitlist and students' records in LACES.
  • Provide, collect, and analyze evaluation forms completed by students related to educational and advising services.
  • Lead an enrollment and retention team to explore best practices for enrolling and retaining students.
  • Meet with Coordinator/Director weekly to review program performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
