About The Position

The Career and Academic Counselor at Bowling Green State University plays a vital role in providing academic advising to students, particularly those who are undecided or considering changing their majors. Requirements

  • Master's Degree in a relevant field.
  • 1 year of advising experience or equivalent experience as a GA or student employee.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of university degree programs and academic policies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, PeopleSoft/CSS, and other relevant technologies.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to interact well with diverse populations.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of developmental advising strategies.
  • Understanding of student development theories and career development theory.

Responsibilities

  • Advise current and prospective students on course planning, major selection, and degree requirements.
  • Provide career counseling and assistance with career direction.
  • Design and implement career development programs integrated into curricula.
  • Train faculty and staff on career development and pathways as needed.
  • Utilize technology and data to support advising duties and student communication.
  • Review student academic progress and advise on actions regarding academic and career goals.
  • Refer students to appropriate support offices and organizations as needed.
  • Maintain and update student files and records in compliance with regulations.
  • Conduct audits related to student academic progress and graduation requirements.
  • Create and execute events to help students select majors and explore career options.
  • Develop programming for at-risk student populations.
  • Assist in planning and implementing New Student Orientation and other advising activities.
  • Represent the college on university-wide committees and participate in training and professional development.
