About The Position

Position Summary Reporting to the Director of Career Development, the Career Advisor will provide career development guidance and internship and job search support to students through individual appointments, group workshops, and online engagement. The Career Advisor will work one-on-one to assist their assigned cohort of students in their career development process over their 4 years at Hamilton. The Advisor will also be a part of an engaged and motivated career coaching team responsible for the ongoing structure and content of the Career Center’s developmental curriculum. This individual will bring a proven understanding of career advising and student development theories, and demonstrated program planning, organization, and execution skills and an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and problem-solve within a fast-paced office environment. This is a part-time benefited position with a 50% schedule. A part time 50% schedule is approximately 910 hours per year.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, and a relevant advanced degree is preferred, with two or more years of work experience in a non-academic field.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of at least one of the Hamilton Career Center’s eight industry pillars: finance, consulting, government and law, social impact, technology, arts and communications, science and health, or education. This includes knowledge of relevant skills, industry trends, and common career paths within that sector.
  • Apply career advising and student development theories effectively.
  • Understand the developmental needs of college-age students, particularly within a liberal arts context.
  • Organize, analyze, prioritize, and problem-solve in a fast-paced office environment.
  • Exhibit excellent writing, public speaking, networking, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to build rapport with students and effectively communicate with a wide range of campus constituencies.
  • Leverage relationships with alumni, parents, faculty, and staff to enhance career-related opportunities for students.
  • Utilize technology-based search and networking tools (e.g., LinkedIn, customer relationship management databases, Google Suite) comfortably and efficiently.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity, with experience developing or supporting initiatives that serve underrepresented groups.
  • Work independently with self-direction, while also being available to work some nights and weekends as needed.
  • Be able to work some nights and weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in college student development is highly preferred.
  • Prior experience working in or advising within an industry-specific field is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary career coach to an assigned cohort of students
  • Help students assess their skills, interests, and values; work with students to obtain occupational information and explore career interests
  • Collaborate with Career Center staff to ensure the delivery of targeted content for industry-focused career community newsletters, emails, and notices for their coaching cohort
  • Coach students in their search for career-related experiences
  • Develop and effectively deliver skill-based learning as it relates to student career development, job/internship searches, and graduate school applications (e.g. composing targeted applications, interview preparation, and salary negotiation)
  • Help students craft a long-term plan for reaching their career objectives
  • Assist students in leveraging the use of Handshake, LinkedIn, My Hamilton Connect (Hamilton’s mentorship platform), and other technology in their internship, job, or graduate school search strategy
