Under the general direction of the Director of Career and Academic Advising and the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Career and Academic Advising, the Career and Academic Advisor is responsible for advising students regarding their academic and career management needs, as well as development and implementation of academic and career planning workshops and programs at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). The Advisor will work with a defined caseload of students assisting them in determining both their long-term educational goals and career goals as well as their shorter-term educational objectives and will monitor students’ progress toward reaching established goals and will appropriately intervene as necessary.

  • Maintain a caseload of new and continuing students and provide them with accurate information regarding college policies and procedures, educational options, core and major requirements, curricular offerings, externship opportunities, career opportunities, and available support services.
  • Provide academic counseling for all first-time students to the College, assisting in the selection and scheduling of classes.
  • Help students transition to college life by assisting them with long and short range academic and financial planning, time management, study skills, career development, etc.
  • Provide career counseling including career decision making and job-hunting strategies for externships and full-time jobs to students.
  • Monitor students’ academic progress throughout the semester through CIA Cares Early Alerts system from faculty and follow through with students and faculty to ensure student support.
  • Refer students to college and community support services as needed and monitor their usage of these services.
  • Maintain ongoing meetings with students on academic probation or who have a contract per the Academic Standing Committee, and make sure students are following prescribed courses of action.
  • Monitor students’ progress toward graduation by regularly reviewing degree audits and making sure that students understand their requirements for graduation.
  • Coach job seekers on issues such as resume and cover letter writing, interviewing skills, choosing between job offers, salary negotiation, etc.
  • Assist, advise, and ensure all Bachelor students are registered for each term through graduation.
  • Track caseload progress toward completion of degree program.
  • Develop and deliver workshops and presentations regarding career planning and job-search strategies.
  • Act as liaison with the Student Finance and the Registrar’s offices to ensure that students understand their financial obligations and have planned accordingly.
  • Coordinate with the Library Learning Commons to ensure that students are utilizing the services available for academic improvement.
  • Support and implement strategies for improving retention.
  • Work closely with Associate Director of Career Services to promote on-campus recruiting, career fairs, and employer presentations.
  • Keep up to date on industry trends for the benefit of the Career and Academic Advising staff and job seekers.
  • Educate students and alumni on technological resources available to job seekers.
  • Maintain advising notes and other pertinent information within the CIA Cares database.
  • Conduct and document regular outreach to students during their Externship semester to provide assistance with completing the course and to ensure on-time return from Externship.
  • Produce regular reports regarding outreach, students entering Externship, students returning from Externship, and others as needed.
  • Gather data and assess metrics related to externship retention and student outreach to develop meaningful suggestions to increase the impact of outreach.
  • Responsible for meeting or exceeding assigned retention goals.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • One (1) to two (2) years career counseling, academic advising, or other related experience.
  • Ability to deliver high-touch, proactive customer service.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to be adaptable, dependable and handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive issues with confidentiality and discretion.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills required.
  • Must have demonstrated ability in organizational, time management, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of computerized job-search assistance tools
  • Strong computer experience, which must include abilities to work effectively with MS Office suite products, i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
