About The Position

This role serves as an integral member of the inpatient medical team by assisting the providers with various non-clinical duties. The goal of the role is to help the physicians and nursing staff work at the highest scope of their practice, ultimately improving the quality of care provided to the patients hospitalized at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. This position works directly with the interdisciplinary team members as well as the patients/families, allowing for a unique opportunity to gain invaluable clinical exposure in an inpatient pediatric setting. This role is also a key participant in multiple hospital-wide initiatives related to quality improvement and capacity management with opportunities for involvement in projects that could potentially lead to academic presentations and/or publications.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • Associate's Degree Active enrollment in an Associate's program Required
  • The individual must be proficient in English.
  • Individual attributes targeted during interviews include applicants who are energetic, well-organized, fast-learners, and forward-thinking in terms of anticipating patient/team needs.
  • The individual should be comfortable working with computers and an electronic medical record system. (Required proficiency)
  • The individual must complete a comprehensive training curriculum (e.g. medical terminology, HIPPA, electronic medical records). Clinical training will be completed under the direct supervision and guidance of the supervisor and CHOP physicians. The individual will need to meet the established markers for proficiency and competency throughout employment. (Required proficiency)

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Participating in patient care rounds daily as a member of the inpatient medical team
  • Inviting family members and bedside nurses to participate in patient discussion during rounds to promote engagement and family-centered approach
  • Keeping track of rounding times to help identify barriers to timeliness and rounding efficiency
  • Obtaining medical records/test results from the emergency department and referring hospitals
  • Helping notify the patients’ primary care providers of their patients’ admissions to CHOP via phone or EPIC messaging
  • Greeting newly admitted patients and their families upon arrival to the inpatient floor and providing education on the CHOP care model as well as family-centered rounds
  • Helping the primary team schedule family/subspecialty meetings
  • Working with medical team to expedite patient discharges
  • Prepare supplies prior to procedures and observe procedures
  • Calling IT Support (4-HELP) for technical issues with team computers
