About The Position

This position works with and oversees the Animal Care Team and is responsible for the overall daily operations of the Care Center including animal care, facility care, pathway planning, staff training, and engagement with the public. You are responsible for clearly communicating job expectations, job training, and holding staff accountable to the approved procedures. This position can indirectly supervise up to fifty (50) Animal Care Specialists, as well as directly supervising the Animal Care Supervisors, a team of three (3). You help keep all departments in the care center united in vision, goals, and initiatives. You work to constantly upgrade the quality of life for our animal residents, working alongside our Behavior and Veterinary teams. You also work with the Care Center Managers in other locations and the Director of Shelter Operations to continue expanding and improving the Shelter Operations program overall, as well as lend support to other departments (via guidance, training, monitoring, and reinforcing) in the pursuit of a Fear Free shelter environment. You will participate in the organization’s compliance with the Association of Shelter Veterinarians Standards of Care in Animal Shelters and you contribute ideas and strategies that assist the organization in pursuing progressive sheltering opportunities and initiatives. You are current on principles of humane sheltering, and we highly encourage our Care Center Managers to present ideas of their own. The Care Center Manager is looked at as the lead in the facility and is expected to handle high-stress situations and emergencies in a calm, safe, and thoughtful manner. Our ideal candidate has extensive experience working in an animal shelter setting and familiarity with companion, exotic, and livestock husbandry and care, and is comfortable handling shelter dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs. We seek a manager who prioritizes being hands-on with people and animal management. Your management style is on-the-floor, in the weeds, engaging with employees, checking in, and helping keep the daily flow going smoothly. As a manager of people and animals you must possess strong staff supervisory and program management experience. The Care Center Manager must be able to manage their time efficiently to complete all tasks needed. You are excited to take on the unique challenges and rewards of working with a large team of dedicated shelter staff and volunteers. You also enjoy sharing your skill and knowledge with others in order to improve quality of care in the shelter, decrease stress, and continually expand the scope of our programs. You are self-motivated and able to work independently. Overall, you are passionate about animal welfare and about the people who make quality care possible, and you are eager to be at the helm of a progressive and expansive program.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must have previous supervisory experience and at least 5 years of experience in leadership capacity, as well as at least 3 years of experience working in animal welfare.
  • Management and/or supervisory experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and days, including nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Ability to interact with animals in a calm and non-threatening manner.
  • Must become euthanasia certified if not already certified.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • A College degree preferred.
  • Spanish speaking and prior work with union staff is a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team-building qualities.
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft applications, plus ability to learn new computer programs.
  • Ability to plan and operate within a budget.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and guide Animal Care Team to ensure productive and efficient time management. This includes, but is not limited to, setting their work schedule, providing training, resources and support; establishing goals and objectives, and providing frequent feedback regarding their work performance and incentive programs to reward good work.
  • Cultivate a work environment that fosters professional development, idea exchange, compassion, empathy and respect for people and animals. Encourage staff to provide solutions to challenges and participate in the growth and trajectory of the department. Leads team with positive reinforcement.
  • Regular check-ins with direct and indirect reports in which they both provide and receive feedback on their development and progress within the department.
  • Host quarterly staff meetings, keeps team engaged so they feel heard.
  • Develop, implement and monitor care center-based programs to meet and exceed the standards of humane animal care and customer service to the animals and the community. Sets example by jumping in where needed, identifying challenges and creating solutions.
  • Develop and foster supportive and collaborative working relationships amongst and between ACC staff of different departments, including resolution of conflict.
  • Provide professional development for staff. This includes coaching and guidance, so staff thoroughly understand the reasons behind their actions and remain engaged with the animals they care for.
  • Ensure a safe and supportive working environment and increased ownership over responsibilities.
  • Set the standard for professionalism, attitude, punctuality, and responsiveness by modeling desired behavior.
  • Facilitate communication at all levels.
  • Work cohesively with other Care Center Managers and Supervisors across all locations.
  • Participate in staff hiring, evaluations, and disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Alongside the Animal Health and Welfare leadership team, ensure that the shelter is following all guidelines as set forth by the law and government contracts, that safety procedures are being followed, and OSHA standards are met at all times.
  • Responsible for being available on-call after hours and must be willing to work rotating shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • As part of the shelter management team, address programmatical challenges and areas in need of improvement. Innovate new approaches to problem areas. Meet regularly with managers of other departments to collaborate on issues.
  • Participate in managerial decision making, animal case management discussions, and population management decisions.
  • Implement and monitor Fear Free standards in the Care Centers.
  • Ensure ASV Guideline implementation and execution for animal care.
  • Develop new protocols and procedures to further improve overall animal care.
  • Create and maintain a shelter that is clean, inviting to the public and environmentally conscious.
  • Acts as point person for facility issues when needed.
  • Weekly inventory management, tracking, and supply monitoring.
  • Weekly supply ordering, receiving and inventory counts.
  • Complete weekly timecards for direct reports.
  • Approve time off and organize coverage.
  • Respond in a timely manner to emails and requests.
  • Acts as a secondary DEA Agent for dispensing controlled drugs to Certified Euthanasia Technicians.
  • May be asked to perform euthanasia.
  • Fear Free Certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by their supervisors.
