About The Position

Children's Mercy is a top pediatric hospital in Kansas City, recognized for eleven consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. Care Assistants provide basic, uncomplicated patient care and assist with unit/department operations under the supervision of registered nurses. The role's responsibilities are delegated by the supervising registered nurses. For the safety of patients, families, and staff, the seasonal influenza vaccine is a condition of employment. New employees must also be willing to be vaccinated if non-immune to measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) and chicken pox (varicella), and/or without evidence of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination since 2005. Immunization records will be required, with medical and/or religious exemptions discussed with Human Resources.

Requirements

  • HS diploma or equivalent
  • 1-2 years experience
  • Experience in patient or customer facing roles
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or, if not a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), one of the following criteria must be met: Enrolled in a professional (BSN/AD) or practical (LPN) nursing education program and have successfully completed the fundamentals in nursing course.
  • Within the past 3 years, was a professional (BSN/AD) or practical (LPN) nursing licensure candidate who failed to pass the state licensure examination in any state.
  • Completed an UAP (unlicensed assistive personnel) program in Missouri or another State (that meets current regulatory requirements) within the past 3 years.
  • Completed a professional (BSN/AD) or practical (LPN) nursing program outside the United States and is awaiting the licensure examination in this country.
  • Worked as a nurse assistant, emergency medical technician (EMT), or surgical technician within the past 3 years.
  • Required BLS certification Upon Hire
  • Seasonal influenza vaccine is a condition of employment for all employees

Responsibilities

  • Provides supportive patient care.
  • Assists in the maintenance of a safe environment and promotes efficient and safe operations.
  • Unit Secretary/clerical functions.
  • Attends education programs, unit meetings and assigned committees.
  • Shares responsibility for teaching and orientation of new personnel (within own skills)
